We stole a few days last week and headed Burnham to Harwich on Wednesday to grab the good weather.
After a pleasant but uneventful foggy trip we arrived at Stone Banks at low water and sunset. The wind had dropped to just give us a couple of knots so ghosted in towards Harwich.
Magic 1/ The sun appeared through the mist as it set over the Naze, giving a Turneresque scene. This was the first time we saw land since the Crouch buoy.
Magic 2/ By the time we reached Cliff Foot it was nearly dark but with a lovely pearly glow, tide now starting to flood. Out of the mist round Landguard appeared a ghostly shape of an old ship with raked funnels. We thought we were in a time warp but it was Waverly, fantastic sight.
Magic 3/ Wife decrees that it's too good to waste and doesn't want to break the spell by starting the engine, so we continue to ghost up the Orwell and eat dinner on the go [soup, cold meat pie, salad & crisps].
Finally have to start the engine at Levington and look for an anchorage.
However many times I do the East Coast passages, they are never the same.
