Latest catalogue from Compass here in NL. has the meridian
marine for € 200 which is less than half price than 18 months
ago.
Have I missed something ?. Anyone have any idea why ?.
Is there a new model on the market or is it just a case of
electronics becoming cheaper ?.

Pity that, it's a nice unit.
Although my new GPS mouse connects with satellites and produces a posn much faster.

The Meridian Marine was discontinued by Magellan almost 2 years ago. That's why it's cheap.

Thanks for the info , guess I missed something.
Another stupid question , is it still worthwhile buying even
though discontinued ?.

...is it still worthwhile buying even though discontinued?.

[/ QUOTE ]Well, that's your choice, but I'd have thought not. It was discontinued because there are newer, better-value products around.

Most crucially for a handheld GPS, the Magellan Meridian, and indeed the newer Magellan eXplorist, have a big question mark over their water resistance. I wouldn't buy either for that simple reason. If I wanted a cheap handheld GPS, I'd probably look at the Garmin GPS72 which is not only IPX7 rated for waterproofing, but it also floats. And I'd find it difficult to resist paying a little more and looking at something like the Lowrance iFinder H2OC, with a colour screen, 4 times better screen resolution, IPX7 waterproofing, etc.
