Magellan GPS 320 software update to version 3.15

To - geoid96,

Thanks very much for the link. However, I am afraid that it may be a red-herring - but I am sure you meant well. I think that is a map-update for a Road Map GPS - a much later model than mine, the date suggests this to be so. Fortunately I checked before loading it because I think it may have killed my GPS completely. Meanwhile I have e-mailed Magellan to ask but, if passed experience is anything to go by, they wont even condescend to reply.

I attach a picture of my model for reference.

Are you sure you downloaded the correct file? I used to have a Magellan GPS 315 and did upgrade it some years ago. Hence my interest.

The zip file I pointed to was called g315.zip. Although it has a creation date of 22 Dec 2010, the files inside are dated from 2000/2 which would be about right. Not sure why you think it is for a Road Map (Mate?) GPS.

I'm not 100% sure that the GPS 315 and 320 use the same firmware. Both are available separately from here:
http://www.inet.bg/~zezo/mag/
This includes:
  • g315.ZIP........GPS 315 firmware v3.15
  • g320eu.ZIP........GPS 320 firmware v3.15
The first one is exactly the same file I linked to.

Magellan GPS 320 Update ....

Dear geoid96,
Many thanks for your continued help.
Yes, it seems I was wrong and the updates do appear to apply to my GPS - I'm somewhat confused as to why I couldn't find them myself - but that's par for the course with the aged.
May I ask for further advise, please?
I have downloaded and extracted the files and find a large difference in size between the 315 and 320 files .....
gps315wo.bin 885 KB. Is the wo short for world as ...
gps320eu.bin 1,245 KB. I assume eu is short for Europe?
To further complicate matters, I bought my 320 2nd hand from America (my earlier one passed away after being dropped!) so it doesn't have Waypoints applicable to NZ (My earlier one was set-up for the Pacific.)
So - which do I go for - assuming wo and eu are Waypoint files???

Thanks again and regards,
Auntie Podes.

As far as I’m aware the GPS 315 and 320 were the same hardware. The difference being that the 315 was aimed at the land market and loaded with towns and cities while the 320 was for the marine market and pre-loaded with coastal navigation waypoints.

There was a single world version of the 315 world database (gps315wo.bin) and three regional versions of the marine database (gps320eu.bin, gps320am.bin, gps320as.bin). Clearly it is the last one that you require. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate that one. The other files in the 315 and 320 firmware update are identical.

The problem with Magellan is that it was sold to Thales Navigation and then a few years ago to MiTac. I think they now have little interest in their legacy products.

Magellan GPS 320 ....

Thanks again geoid96, you've been a mine of information.
I'll settle for loading the 320 file - perhaps I'll be able to find local waypoints later. I normally use my own in any case.
FYI - I use my GPS to track my races in the B o I and this early software does not record the time of each fix - hence cannot give an indication of speed around the courses. V 3.15 includes this facility. Are you familiar with OziExplorer? (Trial version available if you're interested.) Primarily written for use in the outback, it's been modified and is great for nautical use. Plotting my track info has revealed quite a lot. It's also beneficial when the weather closes-in and I sometimes have to lead the way to the next mark! I realise it's all playing with it but, as a retiree, I have the time and enjoy it.

I know, ancient forum post but can't find anything else on the internet after a few hours of googlefu.

Does anyone still have these files?

I'm trying to update a gps315 for my ditch kit. Works fine but has older firmware... I have all the cables just no one seems to have these bin files still around... They're still great little GPS units though!

Much appreciated if you re-upload and link!

Thanks!

Hi, my GPS315 has just started showing the wrong date Showing 23OCT01 today. Haven't fired it up since May last year (2020). One too many week rollovers maybe? Anyway, looking for a fix/some support I found this thread. The latest firmware can still be downloaded, but from a "Wayback Machine" archive of the link in geoid96's post:

Try here: Wayback Machine

I've done a little more investigation - My unit is running v3.14 firmware which according to Magellan GPS Revisions was released on the 8th May 2001. So, 1024 weeks after firmware release date is 22nd Dec 2020 - it must've rolled over around then :-( The date displayed of 23rd Oct 2001 is exactly 1024 weeks ago. v3.15 was released 26th Feb 2002, so that gives me roughly until 12th October 2021 before 1024 weeks are up... if I can upgrade the firmware to v3.15 then I'll have correct date again (for a while). Would also be very interesting to see how the unit behaves during the roll-over .

In this continuing saga... I managed to update the firmware to v3.15 but I had to use an old PC with a physical 16550-UART serial port to do it. And after all that the unit's still showing the rolled-over 1024 weeks ago date :-( Poking around in the firmware image with a view to patching it so these old units can still show the correct date....
