Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations? We are looking for a pocket sprung mattress for the fore cabin ( V shaped ). I contacted one company a few weeks ago, all seemed fine and I got as far as sending the template, but now they seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth (thankfully I hadn't yet paid the deposit). Anyway I contacted another a week ago, but they won't even reply to the initial enquiry form........I give up! All I want is a good nights sleep.

We got a matress from `Naturalmat`.......made to measure, cost a fortune, heavy as hell, not pocket sprung but coir..... but its been good for nearly 10 years especially since we put one of those grid things under it to improve air circulation. No sag, no dust, no lingering odeurs. Responsive, and attentive company . Hope the they are still in business
 
We put a pocket sprung materess made fro Temptress 5 or 6 years ago. WOW what an great thing. Has made the bed very comfortable. Unfortunately i can't remember who we got if from. SWMBO might know but she is away for a few weeks.

One of the best additions we ever made to the boat, transformed our nights.

I had one made for a Westerly this year. It is superb and worth every penny. It wasn't that expensive either compared to some manufacturers. They were extremely helpful and even made it in double quick time so that it was ready before I sailed of on a little cruise. I visited the factory and and tried one out before I purchased. They'll even take it back if you're not satisfied. (They obviously have confidence in their product which turned out to be justified). Only problem with it is that it's extremely difficult to get up of it in the morning!

We used natural mat and it's done well but recently (after about 7 years, the first four aboard full time) has got a bit uneven and needs more frequent turning to keep level.

This leads to the main lesson - do it in small enough pieces to handle. The main part of ours is very big and heavy and we hate manouevering it (to refresh mattress, get at lockers underneath etc) - the secondary bit which zips onto it no problem. The zips do not cause a problem to sleep on and we frequently curse our lack of foresight on this point.

We use ventair underneath it, not the coir layer they suggest which was nbg, and insulated the undersides of the locker hatches beneath the sleeping area.

another vote for nateral mat fits well very comfortable various thickness available and there is no steel inside to rust!!! also all the edges big or small materess will have a hard edge all the way round . I canot wait now to go to the boat for a rest now!!!
 
Mattress

Another vote for Susan Hughes at Bedding for Boats. Mine arrived about 6 weeks ago and has transformed the way I sleep in the forecabin. They normally make them in 2 parts but I had mine in 3 with the infill a removable piece even though we don't take it out very often. It makes the whole mattress easy to maneuvre. Susan supplies a cover piece for all joins attached by velcro which means you can hardly feel them when you sleep. I have wooden slats underneath to allow air to circulate and prevent condensation.
 
We had a rather hard foam mattress in our forward cabin and I replaced it with a pocket sprung mattress made by Vi-Spring.I made a paper template,sent it off to them nd they sent the mattress back 6 weeks later.£3500

:D Yes - they are the one we used. expensive but worth every penny if you live aboard. I recommend putting some from of 'AIR Foam' under the mattress. Stops any condensation in WINTER.:)
 
Down-market

I'm sure all this sophisticated pocket sprung stuff is worth it, but for us it's far too expensive. We've found IKEA provides the best choice and value in the second division price league, different foam configurations, easy to cut down and adapt/refit the cover, and with mattress pads and slatted bases.
Do agree about the small piece comment and the consequent difficulty in accessing under-bed lockers, but the slatted base size tends to dictate the mattress dimensions.
