A patch of the surface of Falmouth Harbour erupted last week , covering about 20 square metres.

I was told once when seeing this happen in the Tamar, it was mackerel chasing 'brit' - is 'brit' the correct description and if so what are they ?

I've seen it once or twice, the best one just off the town jetty in Dartmouth. I think it was called a mackerel frenzy. I assumed that they were after small fry, but never enquired into what they were. It's quite a sight.

Often happens, where predators, usually mackerel or bass, trap the small fry against the surface to pick it off.

I once saw a shoal of mackerel get it wrong, and beach themselves on the shingle. Easiest fishing I ever did, just had to pick them up!

Used to troll for Mackerel outside in Falmouth bay. Watch for the little guys (sprats?) breaking the surface in huge numbers and pass right behind them. A few minutes of that and more than enough for dinner.

Had it many a time along the beach when macky`s chasing white bait, catch macky`s on rod and collect the white bait same time of the beach after they been chased up.

Mackerel cooked within minutes of catching are delicious - and that's from one who doesn't like fish. Leave them half an hour or more and they become greasy and "fishy". Try them smoked just out the water!

Or on the BBQ.

They're not my favourite fish either, but the oiliness is what my wife keeps telling me is good for me.
