Hi Folks

I am in the process of re engining our westerly and require a RH prop. I have obtained a suitable used propellor but for a different shaft diameter.

Any suggestions as to who would machine this to suit our shaft, at a reasonable price , would be well received.

I have received one estimate that was near the price of a new prop.

Boat near Chichester and I'm in SW London so a firm in the South East would be convenient

Here's hoping....

Thanks
Chris

Possibly send to Brunton in Clacton otherwise a good machine shop can do with ease
The problem is measuring the taper correctly, unless you can send the shaft as well
Remember to tell them how far on the shaft you want the prop to go
ie tight on the taper it will sit rearward, slack on the taper it will take up further forward

Presumably a much smaller diameter for there to be enough meat to machine a new taper. Most smaller Westerlys are 1" shaft, but some are 25mm larger ones 1 1/4". To confuse matters some, when a Volvo engine was fitted did not have standard tapers, so important you provide the shaft to the machine shop. If having a new shaft then have it machined to standard taper.

Try T Norris or Sillette, both near you and stern gear specialists.

Standard taper should be 1:10 metric or 1:12 imperial. Shaft diameter ( metric or imperial) will tell you the taper.

I know, but some Westerlys had a non standard taper, from memory 1:20. There was one on a Fulmar posted here recently. Darglow machined the prop to suit.

Ok thanks for that. Were Westerly trying to be the Apple of their day.?

Thanks for all these suggestions.
I know the taper as we had a new shaft and prop made by T Norris some years ago.

It's the machining of the prop I've acquired that is the issue. As mentioned, it was suggested by a specialist that I would be advised to buy a new prop as the machining cost would be equivalent to the price of a new one!

Chris

I'll follow up some of these suggestions and see where they lead

I am sure most prop manufacturers can do this - have you asked Darglow, they are a v friendly bunch. Having ordered one of their Featherstreams a while ago their basic ask re the taper was to send the old prop to them so that they could measure the taper themselves.
