Before we bought a Mobo we were looking at small sailing boats(didn't know any better back then!)
One we looked at in Falmouth during this wonderful foray into the world of boating was a McGregor at the local dealership. Nice guy showed us the ins and outs of of it ...drop mast for going under bridges, 20+plus knot cruising speed etc etc and explained every capability that could possibly be known about this 'wonderful' and unusual design-concept boat.
At the end of his pitch, he sat down and with a wry smile said " When it come down to it, this really IS the Ford Fiesta of the boating world!"
I do like honesty....but it depends on what your expectations are. For me (and her indoors) the interior was VERY Spartan. No head linings, padding at all...just bare white GRP EVERYWHERE.
Needless to say wo moved on.

I am led to believe owners use them for water skiing too! I have never really accepted them as a true sailing boat, but never the less I suppose for some they must be appealing.

But how well do they sail? Bare interior and other drawbacks can be ameliorated but if she sails like a brick or is likely to fall apart there's no point.

I was quite surprised recently when one followed me for a while. It was in about 10 knots of wind and calm seas at the time and was sailing very well.

I would not like to be out in one in rough seas / strong winds though.

Several recorded capsizes of them which the builders put down to user error eg not filling ballast tanks correctly, overloading etc.

Personally I prefer a lump of lead or iron to a plastic water tank for keeping everything right way up.

Water ballast must be good cos when boats are filled with water they sink ergo water is heavier than water
