Can you legally buy Mace in Greece? I feel I want something on board in case of trouble that will do more than paint an assailant's face red. Mace seems to be available all over the continent except good ole law abiding UK (we always seem unsure of who the victims are in this country). Anyway, enough of that - Mace in Greece ne / oxi ?

Mace is legal in very few countries, maybe in Greece still it is...
General rule of thumb is, in Greece you will find much more free ammunition than elsewhere in Europe... (I suppose you are asking about ammunition for a gas revolver/pistol...) I have a friend in Greece I could ask f I knew the exact Greek word. I am afraid he would mistake it with "pepper spray" which is not the same.
Ask the manufacturer http://www.mace.com/

This is a bit daft. If you spray that stuff in his face, you're going to trap him on your boat.

If you feel you need a weapon to defend yourself then I think the best course of action is to accept defeat and not end up in hospital.

No doubt like you, I Googled this, with the bonus that I learned more than I cared for about nutmeg and mace imports world-wide, but little that fully answered the question.

This, far from consclusive, came from a US ssite selling mace and pepper sprays:

"If a self-defense spray or mace weapon is legal or not depends largely upon where you live and how you use it.

In the US this types of mace and pepper spray instruments are legal in 50 states. There are (at present) some restrictions in New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, California and Wisconsin. Always check with you local authorities or a reputable seller!

In other countries other laws and regulations may certainly apply. These weapons are illegal to import and possess in most European countries.

In Canada they are also classified as a prohibited weapons when the product label contain the words pepper spray, mace, etc, or are “otherwise originally produced for use on humans”. In parts of Australia you may carry pepper spray for lawful defense under certain conditions."

So, probably, no you can't.

But the country immediately to the north of Greece must be full of the stuff :)

but in France and Germany?

I remember walking down the Champs Elysee and seeing this int he window of a posh sport shop (or is my memory wrong) and a German friend tells me it's freely available there and many women carry a small aerosol in their handbags...

"mace" is the trademark name of it's manufacturer, and, in it's original chemical recipe, is not legal in Germany and most other Western countries.
But similar tear gas, commonly called “pepper spray”, are legal (above age 18) as spray and as ammunition in Germany. So I am sure in Greece will be AT LEAST same case.

I think mace gas and pepper spray are the same, otherwise try and get cs gas. Easiest way would probably be to go to a shop in Greece and see what you can get.

I have pepper spray that produces a "pissing" output instead of the usual
"dispersion haze" - makes it less likely to get it into own face in wind.

I also have an extensible baton to disable the "confused" opponent ;) These are widely used in security work on the continent. Just don't bash anyone in the head with it as a broken skull can easily be deadly.

I can't think why you might need it, maybe in south America or some parts of the Carribean . I have been cruising in Europe for ten years now three in Greece and despite having had the boat broken into in Sardinia have never felt the need for such things. The day I don't feel safe cruising I will sell up.

Just a question, but why would you think you would need "mace" in Greece?
