Got a Volvo seal on the boat and have always had problems getting grease under lip with the usual little long nosed grease tube.

Just wanted to say a BIG thank you to who ever it was that put the tip on the forum to use flattened Maccy D's straws - to squeeeze grease just under the lip of the seal - - brilliant.

Macdonalds.
The Last Straw.
But hey up!

Fair play.
I once used an abandoned cola cup of theirs as a funnel to get me out of a spot.

'Borrowed' some placky knives and forks once or twice.

Been known to use their toilets too.
All these places.
Are garbage imho.
Whichever brand.
They give Me terrible heartburn!

Oh by the way.
I sell really nice Pizzas and Burgers and stuff like that.

Fair play to Macs for creating a special tool.

As well as straws and bacon rolls Mac's do wooden tea stirers-very useful for mixing small quantities of paint/epoxy etc. Add a few paper towels to the mix and it is worth stopping for an 80p cup of tea....

It doesn't have to be a straw from Macdonalds - I too read the tip and SWMBO found some straws in a kitchen drawer [prob. left over from a grandchildren visit]. Anyway one of them worked like a dream on the Volvo seal.

The Volvo shaft seal is a lump of rubber with 3 sets of lips that seat on the propshaft providing the seal.

They need lubricating periodically and you need to be careful that you don't damage the lips by jamming in lumps of blunt metal. The end of the straw flattens under the lips and allows you to squeeze the grease in.

having had the usual lip seal jobbies and now a Volvo one, I see no reason why the Volvo should be rated any better. Its essentially a lip seal type system but instead of replacing the seals for a £ or 2 every couple of years you have to replace the whole Volvo unit for £80 every 5 or so.

But it has to be said that both types are so far ahead of the old stuffing box that I'm amazed anyone still uses the latter. But then I suppose its a biit like heavy old long keel boats - the leisure sailor is often as luddite as anyone can be

It's known as 'having a McShit'. If one of the staff catch you and you tell them that you were just about to join the queue to order, it's called a 'McShit with Lies'.

I know, I'll get my coat...

Ah well, I'm a Luddite then. I don't see anything wrong with a packing gland, properly attached to the stern tube, (not by a wee bit of rubber hose).
