Bought dinghy and was given old white outboard which I think is called a mac 3. Has anyone heard of one of these, are they any good? What mixture do they run on, do they have a water pump on some models, can you get any spare bits? All answers appreciated.

This sounds strangely familiar. Does it have a very robust frame around the engine ? and an ASPERA engine? If so, i've still got one (c. 1970) in the shed. It actually was quite powerful, though horendous to start, and heavy. Mine has even had the priviledge of having been to the US and used on the lakes of New York.
(its been painted so many times, there's no identification left). It's air cooled, so no worries about pumps etc. (noisy though).

If you wan't it for parts, you're welcome (Hampshire). I might even be able to locate the maintenance book. FLYMO used the same engine on hover mowers for some time, so spares should not be impossible.

Thank you for information. Your description fits my motor. I am in Nottinghamshire otherwise I would take you up on your kind offer re spares. The pull start is missing so I am off to the local dump (Notts C. C. Recycling Centre!), to rob one off an old lawn mower. Why does the challenge of getting something that cost me nothing to work appeal so much? That said if it does eventually start I will leave it in my overturned dinghy to save me rowing out to my swinging mooring so I can leave my "best" outboard, a seagul, to power my inflateable.

Best of luck. I know what you mean... have often spent whole days fixing things worth a tenner or so..... But I don't go along with the argument 'you should value your time at what you're paid'.... that only holds good IFF you'd actually have been, AND WANTED TO BE working!

I can't see the outboard going anyway in a hurry, so give a shout if you get stuck for anything.
