I happen to agree that the spread of speed cameras of every sort is invidious, and sooner or later they are going to introduce real time monitoring in cars, so you are tracked everywhere - they already have run pilot schemes

However, the news being spread by email and on forums about the display gantries on the M4 being equipped with active speed cameras is a hoax.

Whether they at some later date install speed cameras on them is another issue entirely

I watch BBC Spotlight SW, read the Western Morning News and listen to local radio stations. Can't remember which one reported this but I think it might have been one of the BBC local radio stations.

You are lucky. They have just run a pilot scheme in France and given the positive (?) results, they are going to be widely introduced; and this IS official - it was on the news today.

Two things seem to becoming totally confused here. Pilot schemes for signal gantries and speed traps

The UK already have Specs cameras and other non Gatso speed cameras
The UK already have speed cameras in signal gantries on Motorways
The pilot scheme being discussed on the M4 is for a new generation of signal gantries and traffic monitoring

What we don't have is speed cameras being put in the new signal gantries on the M4.

What is the French pilot for - Specs cameras in motorway signal gantries or something else

the French scheme is just for cameras ! French have always done folks on time between toll booths , especially if you are foreign plated as well as looking for radar detectors at those same booths.

But in typically French fashion the numbers of the new devices are miniscule and the govt is being taken to court over human rights etc.. plus in Nice people have been blocking the road and then alternately speeding up to deliberately pick up fines and not pay ( a la polltax)...Record so far as far as I can see was 150kph in a 70 kph zone . Now THAT is ridiculous... but that's the way they are.

Not sure about the term Specs. (speed cameras?)

The system in France is a completely automatized fining system based on number plate recognition associated with radar/laser (?) speed camera. No human intervention. It is not one which measures average speed between two cameras as described by Happy1.
