Thank you very much everyone, this is all really good, keep em coming please!

I do have Mark Fishwick's book however your personal recommendations are also much appreciated.

Just to throw in a wild card I had thought about sailing to Ireland either from the Scilies or via Milford Haven before finishing in Cardiff. Any thoughts?

Re: Erm Bay

Erme is very much a fairweather anchorage only. Watch the bottom on entry/exit as there are rocky outcrops to both port and stbd.
There's actually nothing there except for a nice area of beach and a few cottages.
If exploring up-river in your dinghy you may get asked asked to go back by someone from the local estate that "owns" the river.

the mooring buoys off penzance are a handy point of departure round lands end. forgetting the scillies for a moment (they have the dead hand of the duchy about them) the trip round lands end to cardiff depends very much on whether you are crewed to get there quickly, or are happy to mooch. if the former, then I have sailed virtually direct, with just a 3 hr stop for the tide anchored in the outer harbour at ilfracombe. much better though to stop at padstow, lock into the inner harbour, and have a rest and a \pastie and ice cream. then the easiest route is ilfracombe and then cardiff.

if you wished you could anchor off lundy instead of combe. there is a pub on the island.

not much point in going to milford or swansea - they add distance to the trip andthe only really protected berthing in swansea is the marina. access there is not only tidal but is after the rod fishing boats have been allowed in / out. so you are buggered about. before being over charged. you can find places to anchor in milford, but it is really off route.
