We are intending to visit Lydney YC tomorrow for the rally, coming from Cardiff YC this evening to Portishead then up to Lydney tomorrow morning. This will be our first trip up the Severn, and we think we are pretty well prepared, but does anyone have any further practical info?

Hi seedog

No, we don't have internet access on board, sorry to say. We have a Mirage 28. However, we went and came back safely, and had a great time. It was a bit tricky going up the river, but much better coming back, having had a feel for it! Only one domestic en route too! The festival was great and we will do it again. We had a brief chat with Damo while in Portishead, we were moored up just behind him.

We were advised to ferry glide from Berkeley Power Station to make the gate. Don't arrive at Lydney earlier than one hour before high water. Phone Dave Penfold the harbour master and advise him of your intended visit 07768 861282. We also paid £5.00 harbour fees. Also see Lydney Yacht Club web-site www.lydneyyachtclub.co.uk
On leaving on Sunday the lock gate was opened about half an hour before high water, and we left immediately it was opened, which in retrospect was a mistake, and we should have waited at least another half hour as we were beating against a still strong tide going back.

Sorry on reflection that was a 'gruff' reply, but I realised you were probably not going to see any reply before you left and not knowing what you were going in made a reply difficult. Glad you had a good time. Don't think many people get to Lydney so it is interesting to hear your comments.

Thanks for the info.Definitely like to visit Lydney sometime.

We met a few Lydny members locking into Bristol in sailing dinghys last year. They had come down from Lydney to Clevedon then back up on the next tide to Bristol.Thats quite a passage in small dinghys.
