It didn't get any pre-publicity on here, but Lydney Festival was a great success again, mostly due to the fantastic hospitality of Lydney Yacht Club. I've just been on their website but I couldn't find an e-mail address there, so let me use this forum to express my thanks to LYC. I hope someone from the club comes on here to see it.

To anyone who missed it, do watch out for the date next year. It's an interesting sail up the estuary and a very interesting arrival. Then there's music and stalls during the day, barbecue and beer in the evening (and more music). All in an attractive and historic setting. Departure is not quite as buttock-clenching as entry but not to be treated too lightly either.

I have put weather forecasters on "Ignore" I should have sailed to Lydney but went by car!
The hospitality in the evening was very good and the Swedish, Finnish, or Canadian Candle drew a good crowd, to watch/ dicuss this fascinating way to burn a log.

Yet again a great weekend. It was great to catch up with everyone. LYC seems to only allow nice people as members!
A number of boats from CYC also decided against making the trip, which was real shame. The two of us that made it had great sails on Friday and yesterday. This year I managed to get in and out without making a spectacle of myself. Are there any UK harbours with a more 'interesting' entry?

Is this interesting as in 'intellectually stimulating' or interesting as in 'pass me a clean pair of trousers please'?
Good question. As far as Lydney is concerned, I would say from a boaters point of view, 'intellectually stimulating'. Watching boats arriving and leaving does make it look like 'time for clean trousers'. This weekend the wall was lined with onlookers who cheered every boat in.

The latter. Have you ever seen a harbour entrance where there is a bow wave round the downtide wall with water a good foot higher on ione side than the other. If nothing else it will give you a real appreciation of the skills of the old sailing trow skippers. Plus some laundry the first time.

Which boat were you on, Allan?

I was on my boat, Chausey. I was the first boat in on Saturday. I rafted against a couple of boats from Portishead facing the gates. Which boat were you on?

As a recent member of Lydney Yacht Club may I say that I am pleased that you had a good time. Please al come back again next year and bring your friends to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club.
As a long time boater, one thing did puzzle me. I was very surprised that so very many of you chose to sit with your sterns to the wind, thus allowing the wind and rain to drive into the boats interior.

I shall definitely be along next year. 50th anniversary deserves a special celebration.

I wondered about the discomforts of rain driving in under spray hoods too. I guess everybody wanted to get the turning round done as soon as possible i they had the chance. It was a lot more crowded 12 months ago and quite difficult getting everyone out.

I meant to go is year but got the dates mixed up (just as well, had a water pump failure on a short run the week after, could have been so much worse). Glad you all had a nice time. Did any of the Gloucester crowd make it down?

We did in our mobo, and that was when the one gate was silted up! very scary! Couldn't imagine doing it in a raggie.
