Since yesterday, all of lustyd’s postings have been coming up empty for me. This is puzzling, as I have not blocked him, and his previous posts still seem to show up. They all say they’ve been edited - has he just scrubbed them all ?

He’s gone back and deleted his posts. He had a bit of an ongoing rant with various people (mainly me) in which he sounded off about Ocean passage making. He was challenged over a couple of things and didn’t like it. I’m always sorry when people take the huff.

I quoted some of his posts and he can’t delete those so you can get the gist of his angst if you read the thread on whether it’s ok to do a transatlantic in a 37’ boat.

Nothing untoward I just remembered why I stopped coming here last time and decided to jump ship again in favour of more open minded forums such as the Facebook boat owners forums where people are genuinely interested in discussing and learning from one another. It's a shame, I've learned a lot from quite a few people here over the years, but it's just not worth putting up with the negative side of this forum.

I am also a recent returnee - I left some years ago for similar reasons, although not necessarily related to the "pure" boating threads. However, if I may be so bold, you may wish to review your now deleted posts (which I have read), and perhaps see them from the perspective of the people you are directing them at. One of the reasons I returned is because the quality of debate has generally risen, and maybe your contributions don't quite fit in now.

I'm sure some of them looked like that, yes. Unfortunately it's quite stressful when some members make a point of finding and disagreeing with every single thing I posted. It's fine though, this isn't the only place to discuss boats and I've found on the Jeanneau forums people actually do discuss their boats and sailing and aren't there purely to score points. It's a refreshing change.

I think I may have once been on the receiving end of lustyd's ire a while back (something my little pony related iirc) but I'm going to suggest that some of those responding to him in the other thread should review their own posts to see whether they had fully understood his point, whether their replies were clear and unambiguous and whether their responses were respectful or framed as put-downs.

Perhaps a good general rule of thumb if someone appears to not be getting a point is to work out where the misunderstanding lies rather than resorting to put downs. That "I understand what you're saying, however.." thing results in more civilised and effective knowledge sharing than than the likes of:

It's a shame that you dont seem to know what really happens in the real world....

Yes, from a third party view they did look like that and although some responded in kind others seemed to me to be very patient and non confrontational. There are two sides involved and you have control over your side, and particularly to know when you should stop digging and you may find that reviewing your own side will help reduce the stress.

I would have left too but the admin now offer the service of disappearing the covid, brexit and politics bickering part of the forums if a user requests it. This is what it looks like for me now. Ahhhh peace at last. Pretty sure with that gone the chance of building up animosity with other users that carries over to other parts of the forum is minimal

It was a real surprise when I came back to see the new sub forums. Can't see though why you need to hide them. Just don't go down there!. Just scrolled down and seen the authors of the latest posts and that is enough to put anybody half sensible off.

The Lounge has turned into a virtual Fight Club venue for those who can't quite pick up the courage for something like Mumsnet.

As a consequence, some of the most important topics facing us today - Brexit, Global Warming, and Covid-19 - have been confined to the nutter backwaters. Bizarre.

As you however say, best avoided.
