Lurkers !

Sadly I have met many people who won't contribute because there is so much rudeness these days on forums like these that they feel whatever they say it will be replied to in a offensive and derogatory manner!

tbh i have not been boats all that long, started with a small 12ft speed boat fhat had a massive 5hp engine, so a sheep in wolfs clothing if you like.

Wife was never keen beforhand about owning a boar, guess she thought i'd drive fast and furious like on my motor bikes in our early days, si rather than risk a lot of expense to find she was not keen, this was a 'taster' boat.

Unexpectedly, we had so much trouble with it and so many laughs along the way, ss soon as we got our first trouble free run on The Lee she was hooked.

now we have a cruiser it's sod the house work lets go boating when we can :).

I can't say we've ever detected any animosity from long or narrow boat owners in our journeys, far from it, enjoying the social contact and 'help each other attitude' we used to enjoy when camping. i wonder if that is part if the enjoyment drive in many boaters, as camping today site owners seem to charge by the blade of grass instead if by the tent or caravan, many god sites being turned from fields into lines of cabins.

'Us and them' seems to happen more with yacht owners, inititialy i thought snobery as once you mentioned you had a speed boat the frost is noticeable, but think thats more the stupid few of the speed boat owners that cause this.

I can understan NB owners get annoyed if a cruiser causing a wake makes their boat sway, but it is two way traffic guys. i get it to when moored from others and NB's which i rarely see a NB doing less than 2 notts, too often it seems 6 upwards when limit is 4.

All of us have to remmember it's the medium we choose to travel or live on, it's not firm like a road and we all knew that before we started.

There is a big uptake in boating as people turn away in droves from foreign holidays in fear of recent events.that means a surge of newbee's learning from scratch and more mistakes get made out of inexperience, so why not share to sleuve this? They will be bringing money into the waterways in licence and mooring fee's and that's got ti be good for everyone surely?

Keeping your head buried in the water so to speak, not posting in forums like here when you have something to say, will not help you or anyone else to behave better

I occasionally visit if I see a post about Shepperton, where I used to live. I learned to sail in Thames Ditton: BMYC.

How long ago Nigel
A few names you might remember Bob Tough, Dave Nichols, Bill Emmerson, Roger Kirkman.
Sadly all that is left of The British Motor Yacht Club is the sailing section at Thames Ditton.

The seventh post on this thread sums it up

Plain rudeness,I signed up several years ago but stopped posting when at least one member and recently,a Moderator
Expressed their dislike for Canal craft
Using terminology such as Plague and hate narrowboats is less than condusive to positive discussion.

...and you started to repost to complain that you think I'm being rude!?

You make no sense at all, as you would have remained a lurker if that really were the case! :encouragement:

Now you popped your head up, how about a few posts then, nice to see you back :p

It was about 45 years ago. I only remember Chris Bone, and Julian Brady, also my age.

Oh OK Bob Tough would of been there then. Remember a Tony Bone and later hes son David Bone dont remember Julian Brady.
Good old days my time back then was from about 35 years ago

Crikey Nigel - 45 years ago that was before the Sinclair ZX81 ?

Before I got into the hobby in my 20', I know bulletin boards were the then the Internet of the day. if you needed a printer driver you made an entry on the board and hoped another enthusiast could help.

Downloading a driver over a phone line could take hours, even days.

Seemed to me the behaviour or protocols was very similar to a form of HAM radio, misbehave you got booted off. the advances made into today's internet made it faster and easier, unfortunately it reduced the gentlemanly conduct level.

I've been a "lurker" for most of the year. I have found the forum fascinating and informative. I suppose that like any new club or forum people prefer to remain wall flowers as it were until they understand the way things operate within that community. I certainly don't subscribe to the thought that because someone hasn't posted on a forum yet ie a "lurker" they don't have anything valuable to contribute
So please be gentle on a Newbie to the forum and if I can add anything to the debate on here I will.

Lurkers are, in my extensive experience of Forums (Early Internet days!) too boring or lazy to post, or are i fact just lazy users who can't be R'sed to do anything for anybody.

A total waste of electricity.

No apologies either, Either get posting (Something, Anything!?) or go away. :ambivalence:

How do you get to that very shortsighted conclusion? You don't want to help others of less experience thats your perogative, so then why post at all yourself?

I like looking at transport museums, dougbt i'll ever own a train or a bus (a tank for rush hour would be nice though ;) ).

I read through forums about subjects because i like in general to be better informed - well really i'm just plain ruddy nosey.

I don't down anyone for niot posting while i wish they would join in. A newby to boating like me can learn a lot adding to their personal safety and and help avoiding potentially expensive or fatal mistakes.

As i've learned the ropes i pass it on to others, why not try it yourself?

I'd rather look a knob trying to help than risk looking one for being arrogant.

And that is a great pity, many good forums are plagued by these problems, and tricky to control.

I go on the AV Forums has to be said moderstion is fairly strict, moderators word is ssift and final, i tend to see far less abuse, but at times seems a bit OTT.

The perpetrators will say it is only 'banter' to cover their rudeness, their is no room within banter for any rudeness.

Seriously, switch Spellcheck on dude. While your feeble attempts at irony/mild insults etc appear rather innocuous, your presentation spoils your credibility somewhat... :ambivalence:

Not sure where i insulted you? My terms were in general comments, but if you feel the cap fits - please be my guest.

Then i ask why are you suddenly so hypocritically sensitive and piously offended, when seemingly served with your own brand of medicine?

FYI - Correct spelling (and diction for that matter) is not required within this or most forum rules luckily, as otherwise no IOS users would ever get through any forum doors, thanks to the mysteries Apples auto correct enforces on the English Language!

Are you American - if not that term makes you look as cool as a pot of cats p'

Do you want to have another go at editing that? :encouragement:

PS....using iOS....it still spells 'any' in the normal manner :p

I don't care to re-edit for those who don't care to be polite, i just let you use your skills to decipher.

I don't always construct sentences in one go, often getting calls or messages while typing is in progress.

cutting and pasting using fingers best designed for filling holes in dams (i have Dutch Blood in my veins), is not so easy to achieve when on an iPhone keypad.

Still, at least i'm not in as much danger of being burnt alive by a Samsung Competitive product.

Anyone had their home insurrance go up for owning a Note 7 yet?

I have to confess to being a Spelling Nazi. I have however learned to live with it. One must accept that Smart Phones don't lend themselves to composing messages.

I went to grammar school, I'm scarred grammatically for life! A committed spelling and word pedant, constantly correcting the proper use of 'fewer' or 'less' but what, exactly, is the point of a gerund?

And (oops, never begin a sentence with a conjunction) another thing, that Napier fellow with his wretched logarithms, what was that about other than for railway train timetables? Torturing schoolboys for centuries, loathsome man.

My kids went through the period of phonetic spelling - it was total rubbish especially as not all schools let alone counties adopted it.

I left school at just turned 15 with a hood standard of English, but i've never used it since (to my knowledge).

Today my kids friends and my gkids think i'm so cool, because they believe i'm texting in 'street' lol!

Well I have learnt a huge amount from these fora, from people with far more boating experience and knowledge than my own. The site really is a valuable resource and I hope it doesn't get side tracked by the pedants.
Being an owner of a planing motorboat (who doesn't lift fenders between locks) a keen sailor, occasional canoeist, former oarsman and part-time angler I reckon I'm best keeping my opinions to myself
please please tell me that the plural of forum is fora !!
please not let this be a typo....please
