I am thinking about the first trip to Lundy this weekend.

We will be visiting during the day only and not overnight.

Can we pick up a mooring buoy or do we have to anchor?

Thinking of having lunch on the island.

The round lundy yacht race is on this weekend, so you might get some good views. I think there are about 80 yachts taking part. They leave ilfracombe about 0800 i think. I really must read the SI's although i am not skipper for this one.

When I was at Lundy, the mooring buoys all seemed to have names on them. When I popped into Ilfracombe the next day, some of the boats in the harbour had the same names as the names of the mooring buoys. Does anyone know what is going on here? If my yacht is moored on mooring buoy "Nobby" and boat "Nobby of Ilfracombe" appears, then does Nobby's owner get grumpy? Or is Nobby sponsoring a Lundy mooring buoy for the good of mankind?

I think you are supposed to call the warden first before using a visitors buoy. Has anyone done this?

There's only one visitor buoy so be prepared to anchor. It's quite deep there and the holding has always been fine in the parts I've picked.
There are other buoys there, the general procedure that if Nobby is written on the buoy and Nobby turns up, he should not get grumpy, but you should move elsewhere immediately.
There are a few buoys for some large fishing boats who will turn up at strange times day or night so the easiest way is just to anchor in the first place, it's good practice anyway. At least you can go ashore knowing you will be fine.

Nice weekend for the trip and it's a lovely place although can be a bit rolly.

Did anyone go over this weekend? How was it? Was it possible to get a mooring buoy or was it all crowded? I'm interested as I'm planning on going midweek this week (for a sailing and climbing trip).

If anyone goes to the Marisco Tavern (the pub on the island), be sure to seek out the sailing logbook and record your passage. The pub has loads of logbooks (climbing, birdwatching, sailing, ....) and it's interesting to see what people have been up to. The sailing logbook seems to be pretty underused!

We anchored, all the buoys had names and most were taken. Quite a few boats there.

We made it too, left Watchet Sunday morning, got to Lundy for Lunch. We did do the walk up to the tavern but didn't see the logbooks sadly. We left Lunday at 6:15 Sunday evening to head for Padstow cos the weather didn't look suitable for overnighting at Lunday. Had an exilerating ride to Padstow, completely airbourne at one point, have now learnt to work the throttle over the waves. Still managed to maintain 20 knots and got here at 8:30 yesterday.

The dolphins on the way to Lunday were amazing!

Looks like a nice day on Lundy. I'm hoping that most of those boats are there for the weekend and we'll be able to find a mooring buoy. Otherwise, there'll be a scary first significant anchoring exercise to be done.

I think it might take me a little longer to get from the Watchet region to Lundy: looks like I'll be tacking out there from Portishead which might take a little while!

On our way from Plymouth over the weekend we made Lundy our first stop. we picked up a bouy which was maked with a boat name. I then phoned the number in the almanac and the lady said it belonged to a boat from Clovelly, who probably would not be over. We stayed until 10pm ans he didn't arrive.
