I am thinking of visiting lundy for the first time this bank holiday weekend.we will be going from milford. has anyone any advice suggestions for the trip and visit. we will hopefully stay saturday and sunday evening. thanks in advance

Almost two decades since I last sailed there. Can't give you much advice other than to take some heavy duty ear plugs (that there lighthouse used to shake me awake when the visibility was bad) and a good set of walking boots.
Good pub and wonderful views.

I have never anchored there, but was told by a friend who did that you need a long anchor rode in at least one of the anchorages.

I've been twice, anchored in Landing Bay on the east side both times. Holding seems to be good but it isn't perfectly sheltered even in westerlies so if you're planning an overnight stop, pick a period of very settled weather or prepare for a disturbed night's sleep.

The island itself is well worth exploring and very attractive and the pub is good too. As another poster has pointed out, the foghorn on the light by Landing Bay is a little noisy so I'd avoid fog as well.

Well worth a visit and it's a nice day's sail from Milford.

We used to do Lundy from Appledore on Wayfarers #2, #3 and #4 ie via Bideford Bar to overnight at Clovelly in the pierhead 'Red Lion' and then do the to and fro (W/E) [More than often missed] dash for a pint or two or three at the Marisco ... and that was in the early
60's when there was a regular De Haviland Rapide service from Chivenor (to stock up the Marisco) and an occasional boat service from Ilfracombe (to refresh the store.)

Your anchoring choice depends on the wind ... and it doesn't look good for anchoring next the Landing Beach next W/E ....

Was there last summer.

Lovely place - but if it blows from the E or NE your anchoring options are limited - and you might have to bale out.

Holding is OK - there are a number of moorings - but they are all private though sometimes you can get the nod to use one with the usual provisos about if the owner turns up

Aaah Clovelly and the Red Lion. Great memories of rowing ashore for a pint, only to see the postie running down the steep steps of the village with a sledge full of mail behind him!

Sorry if this is "sucking eggs" but in strong westerlies, don't anchor too near the cliffs on the East coast, the down draughts are horrendous. Far better a bit of swell further out.
