Hi.
You can soak the pieces in a bucket of petol or paraffin, then use a brush. Then re-coat in a fine grease. Most of the major winch manufacturers produce a winch grease for the job.
Oh! and mind you dont drop any bits over the side when your taking the winch apart!

I used 'Gunk' then washed thouroughly in hot soapy water.
Re-lubricated with light oil - '3-in-one' - or similar.

I can agree with the wash in petrol or paraffin, though last time I just simply sprayed with WD40 and wiped down.
I have a nice tube of general purpose Winch grease, I will dig the name out for you. If I remember correctly, I bought this in the chandlery in Chichester, though thats not going to be much use to you in Spain.
The pawls must be lubricated with light oil, NOT 3 in 1, as the name implies it is 3 types of oil (probably more now) combined. The "light" oil evaperates off leaving a sticky goo. I was told to use sewing machine oil, seems to work so far.
If in doubt, talk to those nice men at Harken, they were very helpful (no connection).

Clean and lubricate with diesel. Works a treat! don't use any grease, just kucks everything up!

This tip was given to me by the boat nigger on a maxi. With 20+ winches to service he ought to know. Don't forget less is more...
