I’ve never laid up my boat for more than 6 months and never had an issue with the stern tube bearing sticking. However for 18 months I’m concerned it may. Does anyone spray anything in there prior to a longer layup?

In case it sticks.

What do you recommend? Impossible to put grease in so it’ll have to be something sprayed in liquid form. Silicone spray?

I know my post was a little flippant and I apologise.

To be honest - I would leave it alone ... and when you recommission boat - turn the shaft by hand to make sure its free before launch. Then you have chance to replace bearing IF necessary ... but I doubt you will need to.

I wouldn't bother with any lubricant.
Maybe before launch I would try and spray with water and if reluctance too move gently work the shaft until free.

I can't see any damage being done.

If you are asking about the cutlass bearing then nothing as it is rubber and designed to be water lubricated only. But check it before you relaunch as, depending on the age it could have hardened or perished over that time.

If you are asking about the internal shaft seal then it depends what type is fitted. If a stuffing box I suggest to replace the packing material prior to launch, other types have some other requirements.

There will be some costs associated with properly laying up and re-launching over that length of time, but worth to factor those is and do it right to avoid greater costs and/or hassle later on.
