I plan to change the oil in my VP2003. The maunal says ues SAE30, API CD. My local Halfords and B&Q don't have that. They both stock SAE 15W40, API CF for normally aspirated diesel engines. Can anyone tell me if that will be OK or should I hunt further for the proper stuff? And if so, can anyone say where I should go looking for it?

TIA,
Derek

The CF is better than the CD. You can use the CF but don't ever use CC or less. Diesel oils are improving all the time so really if you buy the latest oil, you should be fine. I changed my oil on my VP 2003 last night and I used ESSO superlube semi synthethic. My advice would be go ahead and be assured that what you are using is bound to be better than what they recommended all those years ago when they built the engine and wrote the manual.

API CD grade is obsolete. Until recently many companies were still producing to this standard but presumably they will gradually phase it out. The replacement is API CF. There is a guide to all grades at this site.

Be very careful before substituting "the best you can buy" for the API CD grade that was originally specified. The TBN (total base number) of high performance oils is high, perhaps 14 - 18, to cope with the high temperatures of turbo charged trucks operating for 16 hours per day non-stop. The TBN of old CD grades was about 3. Using high TBN oils in normally aspirated, low revving, cold engines can cause serious bore wear.

Personally, I would always use API CC if I could get it. The Shell version of this lubricant was specifically developed for Bukh engines in lifeboats and it is an excellent long-term performer.

The current Volvo Penta diesel engine oil spec is 15W/40 ACEA E3 API CG-4.. Use the 15W/40 with no worries...

I use the lowest spec diesel engine oil from halfords, 10/40 I think in a black can, rather than the high spec / synthetic / turbo stuff.

Routine oil analysis shows nothing to be unduly concerned about in a 13 year old VP 2002 with about 5000 hours on the clock.

If you are absolutely desperate for CD grade you could get it from Marine Power at Deacons boatyard (just past Aladdin's cave) at Swanwick. It is Yanmar own brand (Yanmar also specify CD) and is about £20 plus for about a gallon (ok I've not got the hang of litres yet).

I had a word with the Yanmar main agents (EP Barrus) about the oil and they said that CF was fine, but don't a) mess up your engine nor b) spend the money on the synthetics which are for turbocharged hot running diesels. Allegedly marine diesels always run cold.

I expect the same would apply to Volvo engines.

from your post I am somewhat confused as to where a Yanmar 4LHA might fit in ..................it's definitely a Yanmar, it's got a turbocharger and it's marine

could you be a little more specific about "(a) don't mess up your engine"

finally, thanks for the source of a CD grade oil

Why not just bite the bullet and buy a can of the correct oil from Volvo. I know their prices are an absolute rip off but at least you can be assured that you are using the correct stuff, and then if it all goes pear shaped at least you will have a come back!

A 5ltr can of Volvo Penta diesel engine oil retails at £4.54 inc per ltr...

A bacon roll at the boat show is £4.50!!!!!

Makes the oil quite cheap!!!
