Lowrance plotter tidal module bugs - JOINT ACTION PLEASE

A guy from Silva just told me that all NauticPath charts before April were "beta" and should be updated...never heard this before...and that the good dealers have the files to update the chart. So I'm going to pop up the road to Marine Scene and see if this is true. Anyone else been told this?

Marine Scene in Cardiff haven't heard of this...so I'm doubting the validity of the information. My files date 31/01/2006...anybody got later? This was one of my worries about charts from Lowrance, at least in the early days. With Navionics you know that updates will be available (every 6 months I think) and at what cost. As far as I know Lowrance has not issued any update policy for the NauticPath product...in fact we don't even know on what data its based? I read on a US website that they'd bought the cartography from Garmin..but no idea if this is true or what that means anyway. Has anyone managed to determine how up-to-date the NauticPath chart for W.Europe actually is?

PS - Lowrance is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Simrad Yachting AS, which is itself owned by the Nordic private equity fund Altor...just in case anyone wants to know.

amazing how different people can put different interpretations on things -
1. were marine scene at LIBS - I don't think so
2. The charts replaced were those bought over (in a suitcase) and distributed as a special deal at the show.
3. what is the name of the mapping file on your chip ? might be a clue about it's charting origions.

"The charts replaced were those bought over (in a suitcase) and distributed as a special deal at the show"

That's exactly what I thought until I had an e-mail from Silva yesterday talking about April and beta versions. They've sent me the latest file today and it seems from its size to be the same one as I had on 31st Jan. So I believe now this information was probably incorrect and any of us that have post-LBS chips have the most up-to-date tidal file. I will however compare the two files in the days ahead and report back if I see a difference. Unfortunately this doesn't help us with either the tidal flow discrepencies, the metre/fathom issue or the 3-tidal point problem with Navionics. I've heard nothing concrete except "Lowrance are probably working on it". I'm really getting tired of this...

Garmin ??

Since when did Garmin have own cartography to sell another company ?Untill latest hit market ? Wasn't so long ago that Garmin had to change chart supplier through lack of contract !!

My info is that Lowrance got hold of Transas Charting.

Re: Garmin ??

Found my source..."at a Miami Boat Show press conference, Lowrance allowed that NauticPath is based on the same Transas chart database that Nobeltec and Garmin licensed as the foundation of their electronic chart formats".

You are correct it's Transas, and Garmin used them also...that's probably what I had in mind. Do Transas have a good history and reputation?

use them...............they used Navionics.

I only correct you given the emotive past................

If you look at the chart file on the MMC I think you will find its actually using a transas name - but it was only a back of the mind fleeting thing so I may be wrong
