I have been using a NauticPath echart which came bundled with a Lowrance plotter.

After spending a few weeks sailing on the West Coast of Scotland I have noted a couple of peculiarities with the system.

Port Ramsay, eastern end of the north coast of Lismore Island was not shown atall and Loch Teacius, on the south side of Loch Sunart was barely shown.

Has any one else with a Lowrance/Nauticpath system noticed these or other inaccuracies or might this just be a problem with my setup ?

Long live paper charts, eyeballs and experience.

Good sailing,

Paul

It's the Nauticpath chart. I suppose they have to stop charting somewhere, a bit annoying that it's in some useful places for me and you by the sound of it. See my comments here

The Nauticpath charts are crap, except where they're not, if you see what I mean. In the med, their is a zzom level where itis so cluttered it's useless, and at some levels of closer zoom, they stop providing place names.

No wonder they are cheap - I'd get navionics if buying again, or a C map plotter.

Got a Lowrance handheld with Navionics, very very pleased with it, excellent clear charts.
No connection just a satisfied end used

we've used nauticpath from cardiff to spain then portugal the n into the med morrocco, mallorca, tunisia, there is one area missed out around hammamet but we have found them to be as accurate as the c map we run as backup ,easy to use/alter on the way and what coverage 150 pounds, portugal down and all of the med,the detail is fine,we back up on paper charts but usually a large scale and the almanac,we give them a big thumbs up,but as with all things electronic with slight reservation

also from Tilbury to canvey island is missed out on the chart. i bought my plotter/chart from the so'ton boat show last year and have been assurred that i will get a free upgrade when the chart has been updated. suffice to say that i am still waiting...!!!

The Nauticpath charts can be patchy - the top end of Loch Linnhe is not shown, not are a number of the smaller harbours (Kilmore Quay doesn’t exist, for example). I used it from Scotland to the Thames and thought it was excellent value for money, although I only use it as a back up to paper charts. I must say I would rather buy a decent set of those than spend the money on Navionics.

So far I have used my 3500C with West Europe Chart Card - Solent / Channel based ... fine - very happy.

I later bought the East Europe for baltic / N. Russia ...... it's just done the Stockholm Archipelago and was excellent ... even down to the tiny channel between two islands that is shown in my Scuttlebutt SBC does Sweden post ... farosund Marina in Gotland .. showed me alonsgide working boat quay - correct. Just an example.

To be honest - at the price ... the extent of geographic coverage ... what do you expect ? If great detail is required - then navionics ... but you will pay a much higher price for less overall coverage.

I am very pleased with my Plotter ... the cards ... the overall result for me has been satisfying.

Nigel,

My thoughts are that, as Nauticpath are a descendant of Transas, which I think were of Russian origin, you would kind of expect The Baltic and N. Europe to be well covered.

I found the charts excellent from Glasson Dock, (Lancaster), to Falmouth, and even Bayona and lexioes were fine, (cant remember what Cascais looked like.

However, as soon as I rounded the corner onto the Algarve, detail degenerated quite drastically, particularly when compared to C-Map, (whereas further North they were comparable.

Used with Pilot Book chartlets around the Med, I think you could get away with things, but, when we get close to a port or anchorage, I revert to my saloon table PC chartplotter with it's C Map charts.

I use Imray Charts as my paper based system. Not particularly detailed in many places, so the Plotters are the main system.

Rather than replace the cartridges with Navionics, if I ever have the spare money, I may just get a plotter which uses C-map... Standard Horizon perhaps.
