Went to change the impeller on my new to me 1996 2 stroke 5hp. Impeller change but when I try to slide the rods back up they get most of the way but then won't go any further.
When I disconnected the rod for forward or reverse, it was in reverse as it was the only position where I could reach the connector. Every time I try to slide the rods back up, it knocks it in to forward and the selection handle is jammed in that position.

Anybody any ideas?

Cheers
Andy

What make ?

Oops sorry, it's a Mariner

If you need it in reverse to access the shift rod connector make sure the gears are in reverse before you attempt to refit the lower unit......... You may have to turn the prop slightly to allow the gear to engage

I've tried that with the rod in it's current position but it just pushes into forward. I've tried moving the bottom rod but it seems locked

It should be possible to move the lower shift rod up and down Up will allow forward to engage fully down while you turn the prop should engage reverse

Many thanks Vic. I'll get my daughter to try and print off as my wee tablet doesn't support flash player

Cheers

I can only think you are getting the lower shift rod into the clamp. Maybe need slacken off a little maybe you are not lining it up straight enough
