Just a few cables from Boulters Lock

On 14th December - just before the big freeze started, I installed a 120 Watt tube heater , frost thermostat (set to 2 degrees C) and a max/min thermometer in the engine bay.

Just been down to PH to wish the boat a Happy New Year (well, at least I can say i have been afloat on New Year's Day) and found that the minimum recorded temperature was 0.3 degrees C and the lecccy meter shows about 150 'units' used during the 17 day period. Dunno how the units shown on an MDL meter relate to actual units of electricity.

Anyway, the 0.3C minimum temperature seems a very satisfactory state of affairs given the extreme low temperatures experienced during the period. What I don't know, of course, is what the minimum recorded temperature would have been without the heater.

Broom: Nice thick hull.

Obviously they missed a few layers at Hardy Toys :)

(Or you have a few more Watts!)

I have 450W in total, so it'll be warm and toasty down there...

Lowest Temperature

Boatone, it was -8 at Windsor Marina during the period you mention. I have one of those recording "weather stations" on board that monitors in three places... that was the outside temperature.

If the thermometer is attached to the hull, near or below the waterline, the recorded temperature won't fall (far) below zero unless the water freezes to well below the surface, regardless of the outside air temperature.
