Ian and I have just got back from our first visit to Bray Cruiser Club.

What a lovely bunch of people, so welcoming. :) Looking forward to meeting more of you.

Can't remember names so be prepared to be asked again, as no doubt you will to us.

So off to our calendar now to see if we can join in on the cruises... Not the Medway/Burnham one yet though..

Thanks to Paul for inviting us... It's all a little less daunting now..

We shall soon be in the water on pontoon I, come by and say hello. :)

Nice to meet you tonight. We are normally moored on I23, but Silver Dragon is out on the hard at Penton Hook for the winter.

Paul ( the other Paul!).

Lovely to meet you and Marion or Miriam? (Sorry names will be remembered in time:o )too. We will be on I2, we thought having trees in front gave us something to bounce off :D Actually someone said it's quite sheltered from the wind so may be better for us newbies when mooring.. ;)

Hello neighbour.. :D

Yes, SWMBO is called Marian. Sheltered from the wind is good, because motorboats get taken by the wind very easily at low speeds...

Don't worry too much, there is usually someone around to grab lines and help (especially at weekends).

Darren (our beloved Commodore) moors on I pontoon too. You can't miss him, he will be the one who never wears a tie.... :D (His boat is called "Unwinder").

It was lovely to meet you and Ian last night. And I'm glad we didnt frighten you off at the first visit! You will have gathered by now, I expect, that we're are an odd bunch, but that is our charm! LOL! :D

Welcome to the Club:) hope to see you and Viva ESpaniel out on the river very soon...

Not odd, all unique in our own ways, us included.. :) Life is so much more interesting that way.. :D

We have decided tidal is not a good idea for our first year, but the other trips look great fun.
We should be in back in the water in a couple of weeks, beavering away with the polish while bribing the kids to help... :D

See you soon no doubt. :)

Jo and Ian.

The Marathon Cruise, although "tidal" should not present you with too many problems. And there is nothing that beats travelling through the sights of London on your own boat, especially when you are lucky enough to pass under Tower Bridge when it has been opened for a boat in front of you!

Our concern is it being so soon. We won't have had many trips out to feel confident enough. There's also the confidence a person needs in their boat reliability. Better to find out on short trips to start with than be miles away. (Hopefully nothing will happen though. :D )

Jo, you are absolutely correct, take the time to discover your boat and the river, the latter will take years by the way. Don't be pressurised into going tidal before you know you are ready.

I commend your caution. You have the enthusiasm we all had when we started boating but have managed to control it when it matters. Boating can be a life long passion and way of life so there is no rush.
Enthusiasm is no substitute for experience and many a new boater have frightened themselves out of the new hobby by an incident which experience might have avoided. Experience gives you the confidence to cope.
You will know when you want to go further afield.
There is plenty to see and do above Tedders whilst you are getting familiar with your new purchase.:)

Thanks for your comments.

I grew up in Marlow. I spent a lot of time At JG Meakes, the boat yard that is now some very nice apartments opposite Higginsons park. With memories of some of the idiots that used to pull in for deisel, while we ran off the pontoon in fear of our lives  I know although it is all very exciting we need to be realistic and sensible. :)

So a few weekend trips, then we have two weeks off in July and thought it would be nice to have a longer trip, stopping as we like, enjoying the Thames and getting some experience.

Off to shop online for a BBQ now. :D

Still remember going to buy a Seafarer 3 Echosounder there with my dad when i was the tender age of 8!!

Was a great chandlery, shame it closed!

ALso remember an article in Motor Boat and Yachting when Ernie Wise took delivery of a Freeman boat he had ordered from there....

Thames was very different place back then...

"Thames was very different place back then"

Suspect the Thames is exactly the same, the boats and the boaters may have changed a tad ?

When I was 8 I would help in the stores with the stock take, I sat for hours putting seacocks and strainers together.. Not very ladylike according to my mother. :D My mum was a secretary there. I worked in the chandlery part time. Ernie Wise would come in for a mooch now and then.

Meakes was bought out then they started selling allsorts.. Riva boats, Amphibious vehicles and even had a armoured vehicle there, not to mention ferrari cars. Eventually it closed and was sold off, then turned into waterside apartments if I remember rightly. It was a shame... Good memories and nice people.
