Lots of flashing blue lights opposite me yesterday, the photo doesn't really do it justice, you need to imagine that all the lights are flashing on and off, and, of course reflected in the water so doubling the effect

I was concerned that they were looking for someone/thing in the river, but from the fact that the police helicopter was passing overhead with the searchlight illuminating the road behind me, I guess it was just a navigational error?

That 'copter got me outa bed at 12:30 last night. I could have sworn it sounded like a boat heading upstream against the 2 knot current. I rushed out in my pyjamas with the torch!

It woke me up too; then I saw all the flashing lights.

I was a bit puzzled that there appeared to be an ambulance, a police car, and a fire engine on one side of the river whilst the helicopter searched on the other

And what were they looking for? A burning criminal with a broken leg???

I don't know where you are but a young girl got stabbed to death near the river Kennet yesterday.

This is very close to Penton Hook marina, so probably nothing to do with that.

Someone was pulled out of the river just downstream at Walton just before New Year's eve too (here)

Our playground in summer...

Death by the River Kennet

I don't know where you are but a young girl got stabbed to death near the river Kennet yesterday.

This terrible event happened in Reading. Judging by the police cars and tape it happened on a stretch alongside the A33 relief road not far from the Mad Stad. I do not think this bit forms part of the Kennet & Avon canal.

An 18 year old girl was walking home from a part time job with Laura Ashley on a local retail park when she was attacked and stabbed. The police have a 19 year old in custody.

Like any big town Reading has its share of problems, but this is a really shocking and unusual incident.

That is horrible, even for Reading.

Lot's of petty-medium crime there, burglaries and robberies, but not a lot of murder. I had my car broken into (twice), my bicycle stolen, car vandalised, and came home one evening to find someone in the act of burgling my house, and I only lived there for a year and a half.

In case you're interested the river that you can see from the relief road is the K and A as far as where Rose Kiln Lane crosses it, the bit that then goes along between the relief road and "kennet island" is a ditch, so it depends whereabouts you mean.

Local word on the incident here in St Aines the other evening is that a stolen car was pushed down the slipway at Truss's Island which is just upstream from me, the car floated as far as the weir and then sank, so if you drop your anchor just upstream of Penton Hook Weir, don't expect it to hold too well...

Hmm interesting. That's not going to help the flow! We had a spate of motorbikes being stripped then rolled into the river opposite us. I don't bother pulling the frames out now, we've wasted too much time trying to help the police and staying in to be interviewed than they don't turn up.
