Lost RYA certificates

Hi all, after a hiatus from sailing and several house moves, I have rather annoyingly managed to misplace my (cheap and nasty) RYA logbook where I had my Day Skipper practical and Yachtmaster theory certificates. Does anyone happen to know if I am able to contact the RYA and get replacements (yes, I know it is probably quicker to call in the morning and ask them!). Thanks, Mark.

It's worth calling the RYA, but as far as I know the only central record of certificates is for yachtmaster practical. Yachtmaster theory is certainly not recorded.

I think I may actually be OK on the theory side as the school I took it at has said they can re-issue a certificate for £30. The logbook is somewhat more annoying as it was a record of my first 10 years or so of sailing. If only it had a tracking device on it as it must be buried in a pile of other papers somewhere in my attic! Thanks for the input.

Hmmm.
When one of my students lost a Day Skipper certificate it cost me nothing to issue a replacement, but I suppose they have the upper hand!

I got a copy of my Yachtmaster certificate, really a replacement. Had to fill in a few forms and having a copy of original helped.

Hi. I lost all mine last year but a 'phone call to the school who issued them and they sent me replacements for nothing. Worth a try. Good luck!

When I mislaid my certificates the RYA told me the only people who could issue new ones were the establishment who issued them in the first place. Luckily, I found the originals.

The blank certificates themselves are 'sold' by the RYA to Recognised Training Providers as a component part of the relevant 'Student Study Pack', usually as part of a block order in September. Those constitute a cost to the school of around £25-30 each, and unused study packs are usually returned for credit, prior to the next year's crop being purchased.

( A word of appreciation for the efforts of the RYA Dispatch team, who usually come up trumps in frequently pressured circumstances )

I would imagine it is quite rare for there to be many spare certs lying around in a drawer, so £30 probably represents that school's real cost of generating a re-issue. However, if a school has lots of student throughput, and fails some of these, then the certs from the used ( non-returnable ) pack will end up in the Chief Instructor's intray.

Easiest solution to all of this is, every time you get a certificate of any sort thats important to you - scan it and keep it on your PC.

If you havent got a scanner, I bet you have a mate with one - just get him/her to email it to you.

Got handfuls of old blank certs Bilbo. Some of them come from the students who fail the YM theory, and others came from the DS theory students who used to do just the nav part of the syllabus because it was all they wanted to do. Cured that by putting the nav at the end of the course!

Wouldnt think of charging an old student for a replacement. Mind you, given that the shorebased certs are only "course attendance" certs I'm not sure why anybody would want a replace anyway. They dont qualify you for anything.
