Lost propeller

I lost the two blade propeller from my volvo penta saildrive last weekend and have been looking for information regarding similar failures, has anyone had or heard of a similar failure? The propeller central boss is all that is left of the propeller and the cone and lock screw are still on.

But the OP's doesn't look like a folding prop ..... it looks like a fixed prop where the outer part of the boss has corroded so badly that it has broken away with the blades and left the rubber cush drive exposed.

One of my identical Radice props (used by Volvo and Yanmar) has corroded badly but it seems to be the blades rather than the boss/hub which is suffering. However, the cause is probably the same and due to the isolation between the boss and the shaft having broken down.

I lost one of mine the first bank holiday in May. Volbo Penta sail drive, two bladed folding prop. £950 plus VAT, insurance coughed up which I must say was helpful
 
Not necessarily "common" but the bonding of the boss to the bush has failed. It may have been corrosion, but without the prop to inspect, difficult to say. Sometimes this happens if the prop hits something very hard in the past.

Best source of new fixed props is Sillette who are the Radice agents. Might be worth an insurance claim depending on your excess although a new one is less than £300 retail depending on diameter.
 
I am considering a claim for both the repair and the cost of the lift and tow back into the marina but not sure how it will be viewed by insurance company, if it was a common fault then I would expect the claim to be refused as simply mechanical failure. The boat was only surveyed 10 months ago and the report states the prop and saildrive where in good order at that time.
 
Claim is likely to succeed, and worth it for the extra costs. Worth considering replacing it with a FlexoFold rather than another fixed prop. More expensive obviously, but a good long term investment.
 
A few years back the owner of the boatyard where I used to keep my boat wandered up, wiggled my prop, sucked his teeth and said "Yup, that's about to go"

He had seen a spate of failures ... not sure if it was a bad batch.

Anyway, we agreed a good price AND he drilled the holes in the back of the prop for my Ambassador Stripper AND I carry the old one as a spare.

Of course, if ever I have to fit it there would be irony if it immediately failed.

Perhaps I should buy a spare spare :confused:
