Top tip. When you are doing your regular mob practice, a fender on its own blows away quickly, quite unlike a real mob. In the past, it was common practice to tie the fender to the bucket that most people keep in a handy cockpit locker. This slows drift. However it often means chasing a fender secured to a handle with no bucket.
I use an old dockline, well secured and knotted up so it can't unravel. This is very effective...3 strand is designed to sink when wet so gives the required weight. Works every time.
Also useful is a Danbuoy coz it's easy to grab on bumpier days. But two people I know had them pinched by passing motorboats......
Bucket tip. The best are those super strong builders buckets made of thick plastic and a loop formed in the handle to secure a line. Great if you want to draw up seawater fn a hot day to cool your suntanned body, do the washing up when conserving water on long passages or an emergency heads. Don't get the two mixed up.

All the courses I've done used a dock line coiled up and tied to the fender and agree it works well

Fender socks, worn over ones trousers are, to me, the marine equivalent of a cowboy’s chaps and offer useful insulation during cold times.

Puts my wife off if I wear them
