Motored back from Bembridge today with no problem. Got to the mooring in Portsmouth and found there was no drive in reverse. Then selected forwards and still no drive. Managed to drift onto another berth without too much drama and checked the gearbox linkage - all OK. the propshaft turns OK in both directions when forward /reverse is selected. its a Volvo 2003 with the usual gearbox and the splines were replaced with the modified hexagonal kit three years ago

Anyone have any ideas / similar problems?

That's exactly what happened to me last year. So embarrassing /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Did all the cable checking and engine checking things, then only when a friend popped in to look was the culprit (or absence thereof) found.

I assume you mean forward/reverse selected when engine running?

Go out and order a new prop, nut, washer, locking pin whatever cos' yours has fallen off I'm afraid!

The other alternative is it has somehow become loose and the shaft is spinning inside the prop, presumably because the woodruff key has gone, in which case it is about to fall off anyway. Check that and then order a new prop if it's missing!

With the woodruff key sheared the prop will often continue to provide drive going forward due to the taper on the shaft. However, if you do a burst of reverse the prop in effect pulls itself off the taper and is loose. There is no longer any drive going forward as the prop can no longer get any gip on the taper

Oh dear......Maybe your propeller has suffered the dropsy.

Sounds like the nut has worked loose and then selecting astern the shaft has spun within the taper and the pprop went walkies with nut and washer.
