I have read the article on Fluke in the march issue with interest. We are planning to do some more extended cruising on our 35 footer with our 7 years old dutch shepard Sumi (female) which is used to sailing but never stayed on board more than a few hours at a time without going ashore. Do the Sparhams or any reader have any good suggestions on how to toilet train the dog on board? Thanks from Sumi and her owners for a good advice!

Chuck it overboard every time it makes a mess ! It will soon learn. Or chuck it overboard before it makes a mess shoud s--t itself.then, so you could drag it back on board knowing no mess for the next 12 hrs Quite easy if you set your mind to it ! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO THIS FORUM WITH QUESTIONS LIKE THIS . It will be kniting, and gravy making, next. Bob T Ow, ow, Do you think ime getting cranky?

We had a dog on all ships of the `Blackfoot`squadren based in Singapore in the 60`s when tied alongside ours went ashore for business but at sea saved it for up to 3 days then only went by a scupper so that it could be hosed away. I think it was the same for the rest of the fleet except one who had a dog rather than a bitch but he still only went on deck. We had wooden decks that had to be hosed at least once a day to stop drying out.

If no one else does i think yr cranky. The article referred to was in the mag so its not surprising its generated some interest. If having a dog along makes their sailing more enjoyable good luck to them and their comments could well be more more interesting than some of the bs thats printed here by regulars! Anyway ships cats were a tradition - god knows what the bilges or ballast must have smelled like!
