Measure the distance from the fwd face of the flange to the back of the box where it exits the box. Then run it astern with fair power, stop check if the distance increased. Do the same ahead and see if the distance lessens. The end float should be virtually non measurable.

Thanks for the suggestion, Tried it yesterday and no movement thank heavens! Also the last leg was a 40 mile hop and lost the tinyiest bit of oil from the tail shaft just an egg cup full. I wonder if the seal has bedded in for now after a bit of use? Definately a winter job I think. With the hope of the wind dropping on the East coast today we are going to make a run for it south WSW here so a bit of coast hugging it is.
