Looking to rent a long term berth somewhere in the Med - any suggestions welcome

Hi All

After a 6 year break from boats, we have decided to take the plunge and go for a 40' (ish) boat in the med for next spring, and having previously been moored in Alcudia Majorca, I was looking around to see if there were other areas that we should also look at for berthing the boat.

I reckon a 12m mooring, which we would want to rent rather than buy, good marina in the med, and less than two hours drive by car from the airport would be a good start. Be good to try somewhere different, as I guess we can always move the boat if we need to.

At the time we moored in Alcudia, space was at a premium, and twice we got called by the marina asking us to move our boat as they had allocated our space, so I don't want that hassle again if we can help it, so open to somewhere new, in the med, that has space, can be rented annually, and has supporting services like engineering and shops.

What do you think?

The Sant Carlos people will be here soon so I'll put my pitch in for Empuriabrava. By car 2 hrs north of Barcelona 1 hr from Gerona. 15mins from spectacular calas of Cap de Creus.
In the last couple of weeks hurricane has posted a lovely video of a cala in Cap de Creus
12x4 berth €5500 incl elec water shower/loos wifi and parking. "You pay you stay" You won't get moved on.
Downside is August is manic so if this is the time you have to go choose another marina.

Thanks David - we went there many years ago when looking at boats, the marina area looked huge, with all the waterways, but prices sound reasonable. Whats the cruising area like for just dropping the anchor for a day out?

Nice to see you back, my choice would be Cala D'Or, Mallorca takes some beating and not as expensive as the Marinas around Palma/Calvia way

Re dropping the anchor for a day out
We do it all the time. Just on my way back in fact. September is just great with water temp of 28. Suggest a Google Earth of the Cap.
Some calas have restaurants where you can buoy up overnight for free (although a paella will cost you € 20 per head!)

Hi Martyn good to see you're back. How about one of the Palma marinas? I spent 5 yrs in Club de Mar and although I was moved once early on, after that I didn't get moved at all. This may sound like a real left field choice but after Palma we had 4 excellent seasons in Croatia at Marina Frapa http://www.marinafrapa.com/en/. Full service marina just 40mins from Split airport right in the middle of a fantastic cruising area. Only downside is that flights to Split stop in the winter

In many marinas , club de mar being one , the berths are privately owned but under the management of the marina. Sell boat don't need berth. Buy boat need it back. Similarly boat away for summer , in maintanince etc.

I think you will also find that nearly all marinas can move you at will in any event unless you own it.
 
I had a look at google maps - lots of places to anchor off, with plenty of small bays and beaches. So do you rent from private individuals, or is it controlled by the marina? How would i find out a little more, as we may make a visit to have another look. The waterways look extensive, it must take some time to get out if you are moored right at the end!

Do you have a contact or web site I could have a look at?

Hi Rob - as someone else said, we rented from the marina initially, and they never promised a berth for 12 months, just 'as long as we can give one', so we got told to move after 3 months, then we found a private owner who rented to us between his boats, so then we moved again to another private berth which gave us 12 months of being in one place, was a bit stressful at times!

Hi Mike

Nice to hear from you - I wondered where you went to after Majorca. We are in Palma next week so I was going to go over to the main marinas and see what berthing costs are. Through a contact we were quoted €12,300 at Club de Mar, does that sound about right, or a bit expensive. Of the couple of quotes we got Club de Mar was the cheapest, but that didnt include services.

Where are you moored now - still in Croatia?

Re Empuriabrava
The marina controlled part is the first part of the marina up to the fuel station ( you might see it on google earth) so getting out is a five minute job. You won't get much further in anyway because of low bridges.
For availability contact Assun at empuriaport@empuriaport.com she speaks perfect English.
You can see from the maps that it is vast canal system with a permenant population of 5000 rising to 100,000 in August. This means though that it doesn't die in winter with most supermarkets and restaurants still open.

What you see in their pic is more or less what the marina controls directly. I believe their claim of 5000 moorings are mostly privately owned beyond what you see in the pic.
