Would any of you proud owners of old Yacht Register books from 1953 onwards be kind enough to look up my "new" classic and tell me who previously owned her please?
"TIARELLA", a McGruer 34 built by Harry Feltham of Portsmouth in 1953.
Much appreciated thanks,
Jim

Owner: John A Thomson.

Port of registration: Portsmouth

Home port: Tighnabruaich
Sail no: 388C

Engine: 10 bhp 2 cyl Stuart Turner (1972)

(1974 Register of Yachts)

Paid the deposit for collection in the spring to truck back down to Rye. She's been out of the water for a long time so will have to pay the seams and plop her back in to take up but not a big job.
See 2 pics on Scuttlebutt.
Thanks folks and more welcome if anyone can help fill in the gaps - especially pre 19964.
Jim

We had an old East German Folkboat in our club's yard with leaky seams. They put her between the piles to take up. The tide came in and she stayed on the sand! By the time they'd been up to the tool hire shop and got a pump it was too late, so at some risk to her structure she was brought back ashore where she stood until the water inside stopped leaking out. She was tight after that, but came so close to a catastrophe, lifting her full of water!

When it comes to taking up, maybe she should have been further up the beach where she could get a good soaking without submerging! Just a thought...

In the end the seams were effectively routed out with a disc cutter and payed with Sikaflex, hardly traditional, but it worked.

Rob.

List of Owners

Dear Moodyjim,

Having the fortune of access to the complete set of Lloyd's Register of Yachts here is the complete list of owners for "Tiarella", 1953

Entered the register in 1954 owned by A.V. Frost

1955-57 Major E. Stuart Hunt
1958-67 R.S. Regan (certified master)
1968-70 John Cambell
1971-72 B.J. Tunstill
1973-80 John A Thompson

The register was then for owners of Lloyd's Register classed yachts.

I hope that you find this helpful.

Mat

Hello Jim hows Tiarella faring
You may remember we spoke a while ago about McGruers as you were on the trail of sisters to your classic.

In a nutshell Ive decided to sell my 1951 McGruer 'Tuloa' in a partly completed state after much restoration work .. but unfortuanetly have run out of available time to complete ( all too often a classic situation) - Would you know of any suitable associations or individuals who may be interestied in purchase to complete this classic McGruer project .. regards Phil Woody

Hi,

I hope I'm not too late to reply, but my family owned Tiarella from around the gap in your dates (1980 and 1992). I was a kid at the time spent many years holidays on her. She was/is a great yacht. I'm happy to hear that she is still around and doing better than ever.

My mother would know the dates of our ownership better than me. Think she was sold out of Kip. My mother is currently very sick, but I'm sure would be interested to see some recent photos of Tiarella. That's why I search for the yacht to see if I could find out where she was now. So, I really hope that this message still gets to the current owner. I would think we would still have some old photos of her too.

Thanks
Peter
