If all goes my way I'm looking to base the boat elsewhere this year. I've been "doing" Poole for the last umpteen years. So realistically should be on the south coast. Have secure storage, interesting coast and be within 3 hours drive of surrey. Who's got any reasonable ideas? Oh and not be Portsmouth!

If you fancy going a bit further afield for a week or twos break, we have a cosy hol bungalow , with plenty of parking for boat/trailer and car/cars near Milford Haven, lots of slipways nearby . Great coast scenery , 20 odd miles of estuary if a bit rough "out"and you wouldnt believe how uncrowded the water is even in high season.

Lymington. Whole of Solent to explore, Poole and West easy cruising distance, easy to get to just about anywhere and doesn't take long to get out to sea unlike Hamble, Southampton, Port Solent etc. Once you go as far east as Chichester, you can really only go West, as only a few places like Brighton to the East

Anywhere's going to be a disappointment after Poole so you might as well go the whole hog and base yourself on the Medway for easy access........... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Alternatively, and with any chance of maintaining the quality of boating - Plymouth is only an extra hour eachway.
Dartmouth and Lymington are going to be pricy and difficult to get a permenant space

I was Lymington way last week. Asked around a few places and the answer was "yes when space comes up". Also looked a bit pricey compared to what I'm paying now, altho 280 quid for storage and launching 100 yds from my door has spoilt me.
Milford is a no no on the grounds that on a friday night dash its just not feasable with 2 young'ish kids who want feeding etc etc.
I've thought of Plymouth. Fine when I'm on my own as by bike its easily doable within the 3 hours I allow. But not so good by car. Would be good to get away from the "solent" thing. Don't want anywhere where it takes and hour and a half to get out to sea, read open the throttles. Poole now takes me an hour and forty five to cross. Wasn't bad before the speed limit as I could get the boat running at an economical speed. Since the linit if we go somewhere like Yarmouth I have tpo top up the tanks at the barge to give me the range with a bit to spare! Petrol huh!
I'm surprised no ones mentioned Chichester, even tho its still the Solent, at least its the other side. Had a good look round, but again its the space issue. There just isn't any thats affordable. The Medway is a no no on the grounds I wouldn't get anywork done as its to easy to pop down there for an hour!

Went to Milford from Swansea, in the rain. Ugly place, oil terminal. Duff marina. Escaped to Padstow at 4pm, then hit f7 so back tracked to Swansea. A little poodle down the coast turned into a hundred and ?? 60? mile big dipper ride /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I did mention Chichester. Wouldn't base a boat there as a bit limiting.

What about Weymouth - doesn't have much in the way of places to go and pub and eat nearby etc, but some nice cruising areas if bored of the Solent area

Look, you know that you want to move it to the Thames. Slip the boat at Twickenham for free, moor the boat outside the Barmy Arms and leave the trailer clamped, move the car to the green (free parking). Then take an exhausting 15 min trip up to The Anglers at Teddington (great playground for the girls). Through the lock and up to Kingston (park outside the pub), another 10 mins and another pub. A couple of more locks and you can savour the hospitality offered by The Old Man of the Thames himself.

Pubs every 15-30 mins, you know it makes sense. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yeah right - that would be 2 people not getting any work done..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I ignored Chichester as it has all the problems of Poole and few upsides (including journey!)

How about we actually get out and fish a bit this spring/summer? There's a 50lb conger off Swanage with your name on it!

"If all goes my way".........famous last words! I got out voted 2-1. Why did I have 2 daughters. I'll go with the flow.
Not been out fishing. Went to the boat in october to do a little job which turned into a big job. My own fault really. Boat should be back in Poole by the end of feb. Fishing on the cards weather dependant.
