I have bought a 13m (possibly a bit longer including the davits) x 4.2m Princess, which is currently temporarily berthed at Hamble Point Marina. I am looking for a mooring either for a few months or for 1 year in the Solent area, hopefully in these economic times at a competitive price.

I have seen the "boat moorings for Sale" on BoatsandOutboards.co.uk and noted one or two possibilities and seen the PBO marina survey, but wondered if anyone could advise if there are any other good places to look before I follow up any of these.

I gather that some moorings were on long term leases and presumably the owners no longer have boats. Are there any issues regarding taking a sublease on such moorings e.g. making sure that the person granting you the sub-lease can legally do so before paying the cheque?

I know there are a few Marina villages in the area and it crossed my mind that there may even be a market in letting vacant pontoons. If there is, I have no idea how to access it.

The boat will be ashore for much of April, so timing is not an immediate problem - but I could take on a new mooring with effect from 1 April if I could find the right one.

Any good ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi I have same size princess, im moored upper hamble just through bridge.

Over the years I have rented as per many 1000s of people, ive done my sums about buying an mdl lease at various marinas, but shyed away due to the hidden costs of maintainance fees on top.

With interest rates now at rock bottom probably now is the best time to buy the remainder of a lease from an mdl berth holder.

Though at the moment id buy another property and use the proceeds to pay my mooring, but thats my view... appreciating assett I think????

There are plenty of empty mdl berths but ive heard friends who have tried to deal with mdl for an annual berth and been told... no deals.

Id contact triangle berth brokers they may have some rentals, they do work out cheaper but the paperwork needs to be squeaky clean, you dont want the marina manager then adding another meter when you turn up to your new rented berth.

There are berths at most mdl marinas on the hamble.

There may be berths at my last marina too.

The rule of thumb on the hamble is , the nearer the sea the more it is, but dont be put off by the upper hamble its a great run down at 8 am on a sunny sat morning, trust me ive done it many times to get under the bridge.

Good luck enjoy this area its great.

Pm me for any servicing etc.

The newsagents window at Port Solent used to be the place to look for private berth rentals.
Dont know if its still there.
