Hello all… I’m somewhat sheepish about the silliness of what follows so please don’t berate me for rash decisions! Thanks in advance…

So, in 2020 I impulse bought a Hurley 2470 out in Wales, having a tiny amount of small boat and tall ship sailing and zero keelboat experience. However I learned a bit from the incredibly kind people I bought it from and some trial by fire, and then I lived aboard it for a few months before I had to return to the US, where I now live.
I visit the UK regularly, but usually stay around London since it’s where I went to uni and have been wanting to get the boat transported to the Medway area instead of trekking all the way to Wales.
I know it sounds very impulsive and I’m really *not* a rich person unfortunately but ultimately I’m looking for someone with any experience who lives within a reasonable distance that would want to use the boat whenever I’m not there. NOT seeking to sell a share of the boat, but split mooring fees and basically have trust that there is someone else getting use and joy and keeping an eyeball on her while I’m away. Which would be most of the time.

I am most inclined (but not necessarily demanding) to someone younger, like me, maybe female, like me, not necessarily a wise ol salt but someone trained on sailing a keelboat with an inboard engine. But I’m open.

That’s about the summary of it, let me know if this is a bad forum section for it, I’m happy to answer any questions for anyone so if this seems of interest please reach out and we can go from there.
Thanks!

Try to get the boat into one of our local sailing clubs there are two or three in Upnor alone , not even mentioning the rest of the Medway.
One hour on a train from london . If and when running !
Sheltered waters as well for round the year sailing. My club used to provide safety boats for the Hoo Freezer held during February.
Upnor boasts 3 or4 decent pubs and food places as well. :)
The biggest club , MYC has a pretty active social life as well to meet other club members of all age groups.
If my motor boat club is anything to go , there are increasing numbers who find themselves lone boaters (not by choice) who would be very keen to find somebody to go boating with.

Could email me at ybw20221216@tradermail.info ?

Make a few more posts, then you are allowed to use private messages. Your email here will get picked up by spammers - ok if it's just a temporary disposable one, which it looks like anyway.

I'm new to the forum, "longtime reader first time poster" I guess is why.
Glad to see you have returned and posted.

I have sailed on the Medway since the mid 1960's and it would be a good river for a boat of your size. My advice would be to join a club on the Medway and find someone you would like to sail with and possible become a joint owner. The top choice would be Medway Yacht Club as they do some dinghy, keel boat and cruiser racing. They also have moorings and a boat your size would be easier to be accepted than something 30ft or longer. Other choices would be Upnor Sailing Club, Medway Cruising Club and Hoo Ness Yacht Club.

Hoo Ness Yacht Club - Friendly Yacht Club | Moorings | Hardstanding | Sailing

This map gives you an idea of everything on the Medway and Swale, including all the clubs.

There are a number of marinas, some fully wet and some drying in soft mud. These would work out more expensive than a club mooring but may remove the worry of being in the tidal river.

To get your boat move from Wales to the Medway, I would suggest going by road. This will cost about £1500 to £2000. Not cheap, but certainly would ensure it arrived on time. Medway Yacht Club and Hoo Ness YC both have their own travel hoist and mast cranes to keep costs down.

Your other alternative would to sell your own boat and crew. There are plenty of people with boats who are looking for crew to either race or cruise. This would be your cheapest route to regular sailing with virtually no liabilities. You could also join the Cruising Association as a crew member and they have members with boats not just in the UK, but all over the world.

You may find the Royal Yachting Association worth looking at their web site for place to improve your sailing skills.

If you would like to chat with me, just reply to this message and I will send a Private Message with my contact details. As a singlehanded sailor, I am not looking for any crew but might be able to offer the occassional sail on the Medway when I am not sailing further afield. Details of my boat can be found in my About Me page.

What the OP wants, is someone else to pay for his boat running expenses. Hmmm   :(
Don't we all?

So, for a share of the mooring fees and a bit of upkeep, someone gets to use the boat when the owner is out of the Country, which looks like that'll be a decent amount of time, as she lives in the US.

Looks like a good deal to me.

Way to welcome her to the forum, well done.

Yes I also feel it sounds like a good deal

Let me think this over. If I wanted to go sailing whenever I wanted. Use and spend time on a boat whilst the OP is away and not have to purchase a boat myself but split mooring and running costs. Mmm good deal me thinks

Hello,
I’m not a suitable candidate for what you request as although I’m in London, and I sail the Medway, I sail by preference a dinghy. More smile per mile!
However I’m always interested to crew on yachts for longer trips, to the continent perhaps.
You mention funds not being extravagant, and I expect Wales is a good place to bag a bargain boat, so that adds up. If you’re looking for budget, the Medway can be your friend, but a fin keel? A fin keel restricts you somewhat in sailing, and in berthing. All the advice above applies to your requirement for deep water, but there are clubs in the creeks that offer almost free berthing on the mud for boats with two keels, and fin keelers that don’t mind lying on their side when the tide goes out.
As another Londoner whose chosen the Medway as an accessible escape I’d love to meet you, and offer any help I can.
As for whether this is a good place for meeting up….
Well the regulars are all pretty well set up with boats, and struggle with their own maintenance and berthing, and looking for some enlightened soul who hasn’t encumbered themself with a boat of their own to look after, but that you’d trust to look after yours???
I’d try Crewbay.com
Anyway if you’ve time in London I’d like to meet you, and offer any help I can.
Best wishes,
Stephen
