The alleged fishfinder functionality is complete rubbish, but the depth display works.

Blimey - that's cheap... have you tried the sonar through the hull??
for 30 quid more i found thishttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowrance-Mark-4-Chartploter-Fishfinder-Transducer/dp/B00FPQYFL4/ref=sr_1_13?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1440653221&sr=1-13&keywor ive used nasa depth but found them unreliable . the idea to use a fishfinder is to see whats under the boat as well as depth (chart plotter a bonus)I used to use the entry level Lowrance fishfinder with the transducer mounted on a stick fixed to the outboard bracket
