Hello, I did my day skipper last year and got the sailing bug. I'm now looking to purchase a boat, but really need the help of an experienced sailer for about 5-10 days to help get fully confident. If anyone knows of someone they'd recommend please get in touch. I'm looking for someone who can do the Clyde area in Scotland, most probably Helensburgh, but I can be flexible.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

Get yourself a position as crew on a yacht that races regularly - you will learn a lot about sail trim +. Most yacht clubs have a race series for larger yachts - get down to where they sail from before a race - someone usually is short of crew, use your charms to get on board. If you have done your Day Skipper, and it shows, then you might find yourself being asked back. You never know how badly you sail until you race.

Welcome to the forum, You will not be able to send or receive messages via PM until you have made a number of posts.
Your opening post reads as if you are looking for someone to coach you to get up to speed again, as opposed to sailing on a racing yacht. I have helped a few people over the years on their own boats and on mine. If I am guessing correctly you want to be able to do the Day Skipper stuff in a safe environment but be coached rather than taught, so you can go your own way. I am not going to post my contact details in a thread so either contact the mods to pass on your email address to me, or make more posts until the PM feature shows when you click on your name. I would be happy to help.
All the best,

Jock Hamilton has set himself up as Beagle Cruises and is based in Tighnabruaich. www.beaglecruises.com
Though I think he might be halfway across the Atlantic at the moment on the NOSTAR which is absolutely not the OSTAR race. (Yacht Freya).
He’s very experienced and practical. Well worth having a word with when he’s back.

Gents, thank you so much for your replies, all very helpful cheers. Sorry for the slow reply - too much happening at the momento_O. I think getting onto a yacht to crew for racing will be a great way to hone skills and get a better understanding of sail trimming. In the short term @BlowingOldBoots is spot on - I just need someone who can babysit me for a couple of sessions :) . That is a very kind offer @BlowingOldBoots and I will be in touch somehow!

I'm based near Stirling so Helensburgh sailing club would be great, I'll get in touch with them.

Also thanks for the details for Jock Hamilton, I'll keep an eye out for his return. Thats some adventure he's having!

Meantime I'm looking out the window at the sunshine and the wind in the trees and thinking i'd much rather be sailing, so I need to get this itch scratched!!!!

Cheers for now
Martin

Also as an aside, I design and make phone apps for a living, and am wondering if it is worth building an app to make it easier to connect people who want to crew on a boat, with people who need crew... I'll post a separate chat and see what the response is. Cheers Maartin
