Still looking for boats.

And by golly brokers do NOT make it easy as a rule...!

Anyhow, now looking at one with an OMC engine.

On the brokerage listing, they say it is a "280hp 5.7 V8 - same as a Volvo 5.7GLi"

So, given the Volvo 5.7GLi is a 225HP engine and as far as I know the GL is a carb engine and the Gi, GSi or GXi were the fuel injected motors is this just another case of the broker not actually knowing what they are selling!

Are these OMC motors any good? Can you still get parts for them, and how do they compare to a Volvo?

Thanks all

It won't be 280hp, it will be 260hp. The engine is a gm small block 350. The same engine was used by Volvo and mercruiser so the engine is sound and very easy to get parts for, particulary from the us. The drive will be unique, probably a cobra. They are good drives and parts are still available but the shift cable must be set up properly or you can have shifting difficulties. The drive became the Volvo sx iirc.

Ring your insurance company before you go any further to see if they will insure the motor.
In this country the OMC is not able to be insured as they are no longer in production, but as Neale said, parts are readily available in the States.

The engine will not affect the boats insurance. We don't tend to have separate engine insurance here so this won't be an issue. Obviously if the engine if original, it would have been supplied with an OMC cobra leg, so it sounds as if some work has been done. It's either had an engine swap or a leg swap.

I'd be looking closely at what was done and why. It it has been done well, no problem. Just something to think about.
