Mission successful. After a very lumpy passage from Chichester to Selsey Bill in SSW 15 knot winds I was pleased to see that the Looe Channel buoys were easy to spot. They marked an area of peace and tranquillity amongst a region of foaming breaking waves. A little in, there was some short-lived modest bumping in a confused sea and then, surprisingly, the seas flattened completely.
West of Selsey Bill, the sea state was rolling and not so pleasant, but perfectly safe and bearable. To the east of Selsey Bill, the seas were instantly flat and pleasant. Given the direction of wind and swell, we were not in the lee of the Bill. Nor did we head in to be in the lee of the current. Strange but much appreciated. It was as if the sea knew the weather forecast areas North Foreland to Selsey Bill, and Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis, changed at this exact point.
