Celebrated YM contributor Dick Durham uses this term in his article 'Plane Sailing' in this months YM

Can members of the forum please enlighten this member as to what this term refers to?

The assumption is that is something to do with solids in his sea toilet - but that makes no sense at all when read in the context of the article.

I feel certain that the editorial team of this prestigious magazine would not allow corruption of the term 'Leeward' so it cannot be that - enlighten bretheren, I pray.

Could he mean larboard as the old term for Port? Still used in Holland.

Page 1 of the RYA's Day Skipper training publication DSN/02 says "leeward (pronounced loo-erd). Well, near enough!

Its an old spelling of Leeward, based on the way it used to be pronounced. See CS Forester books and the like.

BTW, crutchings, when de-dunged, traditionally went into carpet wools - something to do with being hard wearing.
