Long oar/sweep to aid steering astern

I spoke to a guy who had fitted one in the same yacht.
He said it was a real pain and only did it because he was overwintered in a yard with good acess to equipment and help from a keen and experienced work force. We don't have good facilities like that near us.
I have just had one fitted to my Golden Hind. The only really skilled bit is inserting the tube, but any reasonably competent GRP worker should have no problems with actually glassing it in. Working out where to locate it and marking out the ellipse requires a bit of skill working in 3 planes, but it only took an hour. The bolting in wiring up is straightforward, although in my case there was already a bow battery and I have not taken the joystick control back to the cockpit as I have a wireless remote.

In my view though worth every penny if you are shorthanded with a long keel (or high windage) boat and want to park without hassle, particularly stern to. The third photo is my boat in its berth and I parked that single handed.

Yes, pleasure to watch real experts at work. Price was also less than others quoted. Getting more popular with old long keel boats. In some ways easier to use than on my Bavaria where the biggest problem was the windage with the bow getting blown off, whereas this boat does not get blown around but needs help in turning at low speed bit once straight goes straight.

It’s lovely to see a boat so well kept and that install is tip top. Great pics!

1979. Maurice Griffiths design derived from the Eventide. Built by Terry Erskine in Plymouth. Very popular with ocean voyagers in the 70s. Originally wood with ply and sheathed with glass epoxy but later like mine with GRP hull and sheathed wood decks and coachroof. I owned an earlier 26' Eventide (in photo) for over 30 years, but sold it because it was too small for a creaky pensioner. Bought this as relatively unmolested and spent the last year replacing just about everything - engine, rigging, canvas, sails, electrics, upholstery plus fitting bow thruster so I can actually get it in and out of the berth to go sailing.

Enjoyed the project so far and can't wait to get sailing next year. Just as everybody says it takes twice as long and costs twice as much as you thought!

Looks great though I dont see any sign of the tube having to pass through the built in water tank?

The reference to water tank was in relation to your boat which I think has that. A common problem is bulkheads being in the way. As you can see my tunnel is just aft of a bulkhead whereas ideally it should have been 9" further forward. The best siting is as far forward of the pivot point of the boat as possible consistent with being well below the waterline. As you can see mine is well back, but I have a slightly more powerful motor than is strictly necessary. Like most things with boats there are compromises but overall I am delighted with it.

I have posted bits as I went along with photos and explanations of what I have done. Am in the process of writing it up, at least progress so far for our club mag, so will try to get it into a form that I can put on here.
