Such conversation is not likely to endear me to the French authorities in their Indian ocean island territories.

However we do produce a good drop over here and in recent years I suppose the surplus slops had to go somewhere!

So, being sober about grog for a moment.

Who drank on the last one?

I've read both (2 that I know of) of Sir Knox-Johnson's books. On both counts, one in his twenties, and one closer to 70, he seemed to celebrate (almost everything) with a nip of Whiskey (brandy, or in '68 tennants).

So, given that, and the opinion that I don't think you can argue that he is a very qualified single handed sailor, is it that bad to have a nip now and then?

Not me. I'm find that one glass of good wine always seems to lead to the rest of the bottle. And on a hot calm day, one beer just isn't enough. So I find it easier to resist the temptation of throwing moderation to the winds by not having any in the first place. Boring, but it works. I also find that any alcohol upsets my ability to catnap at will. And because I don't have any alcohol aboard, I don't miss it.

I was the same. Not a drop on board, well there was (a bottle of single malt) but I chose not to, and made up for it on terceira.

I would say it all comes down to personal choice at the end of the day, either you do or you don't but it surprises me to hear that anyone would say "a couple of glasses of wine has no effect on their ability" whether mental or physical......

But we are all free and never more so than in the choices we make.

All the best!

Re: Who drank on the last one?

Not that I've done a JC yet but I always ship rum, pink gin and a bottle of Advocaat especially for overnight anchoring. Half a tumbler of the stuff and I don't lie awake fretting, my feet warm up quicker in the sleeping bag and it's a meal all in one! Not that there's much call for anchoring in the middle of the ocean, but I'll go prepared anyway.

Re: Who drank on the last one?

My very first single handed “jolly” out of Plymouth. The weather wise nice ! and I thought I’ll just have a couple of hours in Plymouth Sound. Found a large bottle of whiskey on board and thought I’d have a nip to congratulate myself for being able to put the sail up. Well, finished the bottle didn’t I and went to sleep. Woke up in the middle of the night and didn’t know where I was. Hadn’t a clue how to use the instalments so just kept sailing about until I saw some land. Sailed to it and went into a harbour. Made it onto a pontoon and people came and made me drink loads of wine and stuff and they were singing with a barbeque going and being generally loud and jolly. Eventually back home I was invited to a Dinner with them and they gave me a tie and a crystal glass award. “Bloody nice people”

The moral of the story;

“Clunk Click every trip” or is it “ Don’t Drink on an empty head”
