As a sporadic reader of PBO & Yachting Monhtly and sometimes even a visitor in the UK I have not seen too many ads for discount chandleries in the London area in the last few years. Have they all gone bancrupt??? For example, LYC used to have lots of ads in the past. Please give some advise where to go in the London area for good deals on electronics, foul weather clothing and antifouling paint please. BR /// Patrik

Try force 4 next to Victoria Station. They are handy if, like me, you sometimes go to London on business.
Probably one good reason why real discount stores are not in London any more is that the place is so very overpriced. You can run a business much cheaper elsewhere. Also the employees tend to be better outside London. You can only employ monkeys for less than £40k in the smoke and you can get quality staff for half that in more civilised and pleasant (Northern) locations. - not that I am biased of course!

Most of the Discount Chandleries in London went down with the Simpson Lawrence demise. They were all owned as a subsidiary of that organisation.

I am reminded of that song "another one bites the dust" as they are no longer there. nor is Captain Watts. In fact I don't know of any in central London now. Although I accept that the cost of living is high many of us boaters work in London and would like to shop, browse etc during the week.

Against the odds, O.M. Watts is re-opening, again.

The very amiable and honest Steve is running it, as part principal with an un-named backer

The most recent owners made many enemies with the way they handled the bankruptcy

But Force Four London is part of history

Just for the record, none of the chandlers who went out of business last year were subsidiaries of Simpson Lawrence (or Sowester Simpson Lawrence). If memory serves they were mostly but not entirely owned by Marine Force, a company set up to acquire the assets of Action Leisure that went bust before it.

Correct me if I am wrong but is there still one in the old Jack Holt showroom on the embankment at Putney? Still mainly dinghy stuff but bigger stuff as well.

Ocean Leisure under the bridge at embankment tube station are still there, but they are not cheap.I think buying via the web is best.Seamark Nunn good and I have had splendid service from Compass Watersports and have bought from them 8 or 9 times.Unlike some others.Perhaps I was lucky.

<font color=blue>Pumpkins weren't part of any other chandler. They closed down merely because they made more in renting their premises out than having the grief of running a business. They own the freehold you see.

I don't want to get involved in a long discussion about ludicrously fine detail but I thought Action Leisure was owned by Sowester Simpson Lawrence.

Thanks

Thanks a lot all of you. We have had a huge dip in the economy in Sweden as well the last few years. I am not surprised at all to hear that most of the stores I been visitning in London earlier (LYC, Force 4 and Captain Watts) have closed down /// Patrik
