The through hull paddle wheel type log on Storyline is getting aged now. It works but the LED display in the cockpit is very difficult to see as I suspect it has been exposed to sunlight for considerable periods. It is an old B & G system. I am not sure what to do about it. I assume because the transducer is so old it will not output in NMEA so I cannot simply get a new cockpit display.

Could someone recommend options please ? At the moment I have to remove the transducer to clear fouling every time we come to the boat and this involves sea water flooding in for a few moments so I wonder if you can get one that is removable without water coming in. I remmebr years ago there was a system which involved some kind of flap.

I have Raymarine ST60 log but with an ultrasonic transducer. Like the depth transducer it never needs cleaning. It's been on the boat for 11 years now, brilliant but it ain't cheap.

I have a log transducer that was originally fitted 15 years ago with ST50 instruments. However, it does have a flap which considerably reduces, what I imagine would be a considerable inflow of water without it, to a manageable amount that I mainly catch in a couple of sponges put around it when removing or replacing the paddle wheel with a blank. I take it out every time the boat is not going to be moved for a day or so without any problems.

It's possible that the transparent plastic screen on your display has faded. You might well be able to get this replaced. Ask Tinley Electronics - http://www.tinleyelectronics.com/

As for fouling, I just paint my log transducer a couple of times a year with antifoul. Works fine, although a bit of a fiddly job.

Two very good tips there - cheers :)
