Log calibration

It feels like you are all overcomplicating my idea.

The Raymarine 'book' calls for calibration at various speeds.

I know that as an overall reading it is about 10% slow consistently.

So, I turn the tap until I get 1kt showing on the readout, adjust it to 1.1kts. Same for the other speeds. No need for heel, sideways slip or anything. Controlled simple speed. Adjusted as necessary!
Brilliant. Maybe. It remains to be seen whether the speed readout is steady enough to make it work, but I see nothing wrong with the principle. As explained above, it would be better to adjust at somewhere around your cruising speed.

Don't forget to collect the precious water you are at risk of wasting.

All this demonstrates the importance of not treating instrument readings as gospel. There's a tendancy to assume that information presented in digital form with a number of decimal places must be 100% accurate. They should always treated as approximate bearing in mind the number of variables.
