Log Book

I too am looking for an electronic log book to log experience. I do have a paper log book already but struggle to remember to actually make the entries regularly enough during a passage. I have downloaded LD-log to see if this fits the bill (you appear to start it off and it automatically updates at a frequency you choose) but would be interested to see if anyone has any other recommendations for android.

You seem to be conflating the two types of log here (see my post #2 from back in January). An experience log would typically have one entry for each cruise, listing ports visited, total miles sailed, maximum wind strength, etc - whereas the navigation log is the one with regular (often hourly) entries during a passage.

Which one are you after?

Pete

Does your mobile phone have an alarm?

Personally, I write up a paper log onboard, I enjoy traditional navigation as most of the day job is using computers, and run a blog to record the voyage so that when I am sipping tea through a straw I can relive the memories. Data from the GPS is also uploaded onto the blog and a spreadsheet; thus allowing me to do some analysis of the trip, e.g. distance sailed, average speed, total milage sailed for the year.

If you want your full track, try OpenCPN which is now available for Android. You should be able to export a .gpx of your track.

But as prv says, that's not the same type of log as the OP was asking about.

Reading this, it's probably the right think for me to keep a personal log book, a spreadsheet or just a basic table printed off on A4 would probably do for me but what would you have for the headings?

Date - Departure Port and Time - Arrival Port and Time - Distance Nm - Wind Strength - Sea State - Summary - Crew/Skipper - Boat

Anything else?

I just used Excel with columns as per the RYA log book.

Dates, boat details and length, ports visited, days on board, miles, night hours, summary of wind strength.

Your suggestions have more info. In the end, all you're trying to do is keep a record that you can show to an RYA examiner. They won't take it as gospel and are likely to ask a few questions about places you claim to have been. And just like an experienced skipper can tell when a crew member has exaggerated their experience, if you claim 10,000 miles they'd expect you to be able to sail like someone who has done 10,000 miles.

Hi all

Hope everyone had a good festive season!

I'm away on my CC course next week and looking for a basic log book app for an android phone. Boat Book seems to be the most readily available but reviews have said that it regularly crashes. Does any one have experience with using it, or have an alternative recommendation?

Ta!

There is no way that you can keep a satisfactory useful ships log on a phone. Far too much to record and the record need to be permanent. What about battery life?

I keep a ships log which records time dept, time arrived, engine hours, log distance and wind and sea conditions, and I write a brief narrative of the trip. I write it up after the trip as a diary/journal of my adventure.

I don't log hourly positions, reasoning to my self my two chart plotters and my AIS are creating a track.

I was genuinely surprised by the number of posters to the forum who are apparently recording manually their positions in the log

I don't think any of the recreational sailors I know do even as much as I do.
