Lofting MalabarVI

I think it is this boat that Ben Harris is replicating. A lovely looking yacht.

John G. Alden MALABAR IV - Classic Sailboats

The next major step in the evolution of this line of schooners came with MALABAR IV, design number 205. She was based on quite a different concept, that of a boat that would be sailed with a crew, including a paid hand, and would be expected to compete seriously in ocean races.

John Alden lost his taste for singlehanding when he fell overboard while sailing alone across Massachusetts Bay in MALABAR III. He went over the side forward but somehow managed to catch hole of the boat near her main shrouds and haul himself back aboard. it was a close call.

Should be interesting to watch the build.

From 16 minutes onwards
... my intention is to have this boat built and sailing in time for the 2027 Fastet Race because it was a Malabar VIII that raced in the 1927 Fastnet, 100 years prior and raced neck and neck with TALLY HO and I think it would be epic to recreate the race that happened 100 years previously which was raced by a Malabar schooner against TALLY HO and the Malabar actually was first over the line, but TALLY HO won on corrected time so maybe we could do a re-run ...

Wish him all the best. I think his yard has done some excellent work and I’m sure he has the necessary shipwright skills.

What Leo showed with TALLY HO was that there is a whole lot more to this than ‘just’ being an excellent shipwright. He has excelled in video editing, music choice, as a presenter to camera and as a blogger. This has helped him raise a lot of £$€¥

Most importantly he has attracted lots of skilled committed people who have enjoyed the project and contributed massive amounts of energy, time and their own specialised skills. He was lucky (knowledgeable?) enough to do this at first close to and then actually in a place with one of the greatest concentrations of traditional boat skills, interest and knowledge anywhere in the world.

Gweek is different and this will be a whole different undertaking. Wouldn’t it be great though to see both yachts on the start line?
